game 28 query

greetings.

I'm just being curious ... Which DS is Sam playing in this game ? The L/R
and IK have called in, so its not them. i'm thinking he might have one of
the harder positions (WK and DLord comes to mind).

And i've no problems with Sam being in the game. Yes to Clint, Rob, or
whoever does the order-entry/printout for the free side, but not to Sam.

thanks

Hi Michael,

Yes, I'm on the DS, but should I tell you which pointy toothed monster I am
playing? Surely that would just get a horde of nasty Noldo leaping all over
me, just 'cause I happen to work in the next room to the ME guys (sob...
sob, whimper... cry, moan)

As long as you don't come anywhere near Morgul, I won't have any trouble...

Oops.

And i've no problems with Sam being in the game. Yes to Clint, Rob, or
whoever does the order-entry/printout for the free side, but not to Sam.

Popularity at last.

We've never had any complaints or used any information. I guess that when
you have been with us for a while some of the more cautious players will
actually trust us on this...

[We play an entire team - with friends - in game 46 for example - I keep
checking but yep we still appear to be losing more characters a turn than
the FP side and keep getting stuffed when least expecting it. Still
very much a knife edge on this and you should see my game 16 Northmen
position... ]

Hi All,

Here is the article from Masquerade 2 that Gavin is alluding to. It is dated
February 99 and I suspect that we have changed policy since then, as Clint
plays in ME games which Rob runs and vice versa.

However, I think Clint is correct in saying that we (Harlequin) have never
had complaints. The article refers to Flagship, not Harlequin refs.

Personally I think its madness to ban a GM from playing a game which they
sometimes GM. (And by this I mean something like Clint playing in a game
which Rob is running and inputting)

If GMs are banned from such games, they never gain the experience of being a
player. Its the same thing as asking public transport bosses to actually use
buses to get to work, or the Chinese forcing their airline bosses to be in
aeroplanes at midnight on year 2000... You get my meaning?

I really wish I could play in a UK Legends game, but unfortunately, I don't
have a fellow ref.

Cheers!

Sam (Legends GM and Middle Earth player)

Playing with Ourselves
Those of you who read Flagship may perhaps have noticed a few comments and
letters regarding referees playing in their own games. We thought, then that
it may be a good idea to clarify Harlequin's position on this.
This may come as a shock to some people, but no one in their right mind
works in pbm for the money. We do it because we love gaming, and since
needless to say we run the best games around, we do play in our own games.
However, it is policy that none of us ever play in games we run ourselves.
Whilst then John can play in Middle Earth, Ed and Clint can't, and
conversely, John doesn't get to play in Battle of the Planets, Iron & Steam,
or any of the plethora of games he seems to be running at the moment.
That said, the referee of a game may at times run a drop-out position, using
basic standing orders. This is only ever done if the alternative of allowing
a position to stop would spoil the game, and, needless to say, such
positions can never win - or actively affect - the game.
In our opinions this seems fair; those of us playing in each other's games
have no in-game advantage, and in fact are often treated more harshly than
the rest of you (Clint, for example obstinately refused to give John's
Middle Earth position the troops he failed to recruit when he 770'd instead
of 408ing, and he will doubtless take hi revenge on Clint in Star Quest).
However, if anyone has any views on this matter, please let us know.

I don't know about the substantce to the crap you people are whining about, but
any company willing to issue an article entitiled "Playing With Ouselves" gets
some of my business on principle.

"Cheers" as you people across the Pond apparently like to say.

I'm actually in a position to comment about GM's playing in ME games
because both Clint & Sam play in games I'm involved in.

Clint plays the Northmen in game 16 and has been absolutely HAMMERED by the
DS. (Bet you thought you were safe in your new, hidden, pop centre didn't
you Clint :-). Unfortunately, any self respecting player would have given
up under the onslaught by now. (We estimate he's down to a handful of
characters and a a couple of pop centres). Turn after turn his characters
have been cursed/doubled/assassinated, armies have stomped on his Pop
Centres - it can't have been nice.

However, being a GM he's not going to drop. If we get him out of this game
then it will have to be by dragging him out kicking and screaming. The
amount of attention he has been given by the DS has meant that some of the
other free nations have had an easy ride so far. Clint will never give up,
it's not costing him anything, if another free nation drops he will try
doubly hard to find a replacement and he isn't afraid to keep asking to be
bailed out by the other nations . It's probably not a good idea to
concentrate on the Northmen just because the position is run by a GM, but
it does make it much more fun when you know the person you're kicking!

At the start of the game Clint announced to everyone which nation he was
playing and the DS were happy to go along with it. Under these
circumstances I dont think there is a problem.

However, Sam took over a DS position as a standby in game 19. Now in this
case, the position was previously run by Dan (another GM) so the
circumstances haven't really changed. Personally, I really don't care that
the GM plays in a game as long as he doesn't run it as well. However some
(less trusting) souls might think otherwise. Under the circumstances, it
would probably be good policy to only take start-up positions in games
rather than step in to a standby position that was previously run by a
'paying punter'. Some people might be uncomfortable with the idea
(although I can't believe that there are many).

As long as you announce to everyone at the beginning of a game then it
gives a player the opportunity to speak up and complain or back out.

That's what I think anyway....

Kev

Not sure if I can comment anymore about game 16 - maybe someone else in the
team can do so? What I can say is: I am very much a team player and will
work with that aim - for the team to win. I am having a lot of fun with the
Northmen, and knowing that there is so much effort put on me (like the
Dwarves in game 23 I might add which I took over as a drop out and is now
storming again Rhun Dead, most of the DS on their knees you know the sort of
thing), means that the rest of the team are that much more healthy. I like
the team aspect of the game (the major reason for playing ME I reckon
getting a good team behind you). I am not interested in an individual win
nor will (I think) ever play for that aim. (Part of the reason I like the
new suggestions for scoring).

As for money I know of quite a lot of players who are happy to pay. I just
look at that way. If I feel that we cannot win the game then as a team I
would ask for a drop and give the victory to the DS. At present we still
have a decent chance though...

As for being safe in the new PC - arrgghhh, wish it hadn't been hidden as it
went up as a major beacon - HIT HERE!.. Ah well I am sure some kind
sole will transfer me another 2 MTs???

Hey Kev - you could have always joined our team and had the so-called
undroppable GM. I think the only real advantage we have is that we
sometimes (and rarely) get to see the MISTAKES players make. We can sort of
avoid that - but as our turnsheets point out - this is a rare event. I
think that they are offset by the BIG hit we take as well and harsh GMing
style we employ.

Oops, what i meant to add was, are your team happy with me continuing?

I have seen players play with a lot worse positions. Chat to Lewis on 2
characters - lowest I have ever seen! Ain't the WK on low stuff on your
side as well btw?!
