Game 48

I have to congratulate the DS on your teamwork this game. You seem to be working together extremely well and coordinating your attacks almost flawlessly. Unfortunately, this is supposed to be a GUNBOAT game.

Ah well. I suppose that winning is just too important for some people.

I’ve recently thought of getting into gunboat, as i love the concept of ‘blind’ play. This is the kind of issue that has stopped me.
When i started and diplo’s were postal cards, that was pretty gunboatish by default. With the www it becomes very hard to stop comms on the sly, so an honour system comes into play (with the obvious issues).
Maybe the trick would be, to ensure that at least 2 GB’s are running at any time and there is ‘no’ team list available to anyone. That way ‘associates’ who join up might end up on different teams in different games.
Any diplo’s in games on the ‘nominated’ turns where they are allowed would go via MEpbm for distribution.
I really love the concept, and a couple of people on one of my teams reckon it’s great fun BUT there is the concept of honour and the practice of honour, usually eons apart.

BTW i’m not in this game, just an outsider making a general comment

Mike,
That is totally untrue. I am playing two nations in this game and I have NOT talked to a single DS player in this game. There has been no coordination from me or with me at all. What I have found is that when I have prepared an attack against a specific enemy some other DS had already beaten me to the punch. When the game is over I will glady send you my pdfs to show you that was the case. What I do know is that there have been a couple DS drops (I think two) which have allowed some DS positions to be picked up.

One way to help fix this issues is for Clint not to post/tell the players what game number their in, when a gunboat is being played. At any time there are a few gunboats going on it might be hard to tell one game from the next. Sure this dose not stop this issue but it could be a help and might make players feel better about the honor of the GB games. Clint is this somthing you could do for us?

Cheers,

Mike and GB players,
I do not think this is an issue as I have played in a number of Gunboats and this does not come up. If you are using diplo cards every 5 turns, than good players do some great planning in those cards. Also, don’t forget for the most part there are some basic attacks and focus points that both the evil and goods need to do every game like, goods must hit Mordor early and ofton with troops, evils need to build an economy and support the passes with everything they have, SG has to support the South early and Ithil Pass at the same time…ect…
Also, Gunboats some players get very creative and try new stuff and that can greatly effect an ally sometimes to the good sometimes to the bad. For example, NG blows his own bridges so Mordor nations have no one to use their troops on and have big financial costs on those troops. NG than either supports South via boats and Mirkwood or tries to sneak into Mordor via CL capital route.
Gunboat is a great game and you have to approach it differently than 1650 or other normal games to live.
Just my 2-cents.
John

John,
GB48 is a NO contact, no diplo game.

I understand that its a gunboat game…and people are asked not to talk about the game with others. I’ve played in them before. My point of why post the game number? Dont give it out to the players.

JL

My understanding is that a post to this forum revealing even just which side you are playing is a breach of gunboat etiquette. Am I wrong…?

I am not in this game, just some general comments.

I doubt people are cheating, it probably only seems that they are coordinating the attack on you. This does not mean that people can not and will not cheat, but most likely I would think players joining gunboat are going to play fair.

I am currently playing my fifth gunboat game and in the last four it really seems like the other side is coordinating/concentrating on our positions. However, I still believe it is simply random bad luck that we are getting targeted.

Drew, you’re right.

I’m in GB48. That’s all I’ll say about the game.

But in general: In all the GB games I’ve ever played no one has ever once contacted me to suggest “coordination”. Nor would I ever suggest such a thing. That would be downright cheating!

In some GB games I’ve played in the past, I’ve noticed non-related GB nations that seem to coordinate. In one case I even asked Rob it looked so blatant (I think that was GB96). Then I find out later that the pairs had changed due to drops and low & behold, they were indeed coordinating because they were now threesomes! Or, they just were watching each other’s play and figured out how to coordinate. I myself do that in GB. Try to watch what my team mates are doing and “gang on” if I possibly can. Then of course, there’s the situations where the uncoordinated nation pairs do things like Threat & InfOthr & CptrPop all by different nations on the same enemy pop center… LOL… that’s the beauty of GB. there’s no way to coordinate such things so you have to guess what your ally is going to do just like you have to guess what your enemy is going to do.

Anyway, the new rules of GB are a good step forward in fixing GB’s woes. We simply can’t have the moderators prop up the game for a side that’s losing by redistributing a nation pair that’s been targeted to 2 other duos making two threesomes who then prop up the targeted natino pair and resurrect them. That just sucks. It’s my major beef with the way GB has been run up until this point. If the new rules are adhered to and we can actually play GB to target nation pairs and take them down, then yahoo! that’s the way the game should be allowed to be played.

Dave

p.s. we need more people joining the player pool to take up dropped nations to avoid them being given to players already in the game.

Humm, I have stayed away from GB because the GM published the players names and seemed to intervene excessively. If that is no longer the case I might give GN a try.

Ed,
I think you’d like it. Check out the new GB rules. Threesomes are no longer allowed. Given that, that CL can’t be combined with x2Scout nations, and the advent of the outside player pool (who are first choice for picking up dropped nation or duo), I think the major issues are addressed.
