1 fewer hard choice to make in the game. You could argue that the improvements you've mentioned have made the game more difficult - you are even more aware of possibilities and those choices are even harder than before, along with the increases pressure of all your dialed in allies making requests/demands.. A hugely predominant theme is managing Max Characters across the team to ensure Maximum Order capability.
Here's a good spotlight - Northmen and Woodmen, and Eothraim, for that matter, get as many "Champions" as the Noldo. Ah, political correctness run amok, IMO...Â
A key consideration is - do you believe this will 1) lengthen games and/or 2) increase the player base..?
I think that the game has changed. So with that change we need to keep pace with the modern gaming world. Also we're able to put effort into development of the game, that GSI ran out of steam on. So I'm looking to make a better game, and my thoughts on characters that are special is that they are fun to play. Lots of experienced player pick DS 1650 over FP 1650 due to the options of DS characters, and so it caters to that desire.
I also think it's an improvement and more fun. So then that leads to a better game, which leads to players having more fun, playing and enjoying the game more (I cf with the impact that King/Prince characters had in FAS, nearly, it not, fully 100% approval) had on the game.
As an opposing "argument" I'd say that keeping the game to the same format as before is a recipe for slowly dying games/player apathy. I point to our success of KS where it's our most popular module now. So change, although not invariably always good, is with fore-thought, and consultation, a good thing here I think. I've got other plans for 1650 but I've got around 11 projects on the go with ME alone, (I'm working on our other game legends as well btw) so I thought the best way to test it is to try it out.

How does it make it easier? It makes it
different. JO makes it easier, email makes it
easier, sSource materials on the web make it
easier. I think it makes it different. So
easier in terms of it's easier because you have more orders yes.
