Quick reminder. You are NOT allowed to talk to others in the game about ANY aspect of that game.
Please respect those rules. If you don't want to stick to them don't play the game.
We have some formats of GB with 50 word diplos every 5 turns if you want but then it's still limited solely to the 50 words and NOTHING more.

Hi Clint,
I don't know if this email was sent because of what I said on this list (came shortly on the heels of my post), but you can plainly read that I said I wanted to chat about it after the game was over.
1. I knew Richard was in the game because you list all our names each turn,
2. Everyone in that game knew there was only one last turn to run, once again, because you told us.

RD: Firstly, I have no problem with Drew breaking silence when he did, for
the reasons he gives.
Secondly, I feel strongly that it is a BAD idea for MEGames to publish the
names of people playing GB games before those games end. It's like
introducing somebody at a party, and then saying you can't talk to them
until the party's over. If you do NOT publish the names, there is no
temptation to contact the other players.
I am not suggesting for one moment that anybody cheated by breaking silence
early, but there is no point in having rules if you cannot enforce them. I
know you are running these games on trust, but why not remove the
temptation?
As for the 50-word diplo version every 5 turns, how on earth do you know if
players are abiding by that? It is self-evidently unenforceable.
Just asking!
Richard.

I feel similarly strongly the other way. It helps players not to chat when they know who they cannot chat to.

Otherwise you just chat and find out that others are in the game having gabbed. I've seen it happen lots of times.

Same thing for any aspect of the game. It's the rules - if you break the rules then you're cheating. If you want to cheat then eventually you'll, probably, be found out. Same for the entire GB game - there's no way that you can stop players talking if they want to so we have to trust the players.
In one game you mentioned that you didn't trust a ruling we made - after you dropped the game we informed you why the "strange circumstance" had occurred in the game (ie Nazgul under 3 different nations at your capital I recall - the answer - one nation had died and the 3rd Nazgul had been recruited). Ie it's all about trust. We enforce the rules and investigate where players feel aggrieved and it's similar with the messages.
I don't mind if the game runs with the messages or not - in the two games (as a player) that I'm in with them there's been less co-ordination than say game 12 where my duo worked well with another ally despite no communication but that's sort of a different, although still interesting, topic to look into.

Richard:
I have a theory. But first a question to the players. If players drop and their Gunboat nations are picked up by others, are the players told of this? I don't play Gunboat, so I don't know the answer. Something along the lines "Old Joe has quit and Bill the Weasel is now in the game."
The purpose of identifying everyone in the game is to prevent inadvertant conversations. So, presumably, the game players are kept abreast of who comes into the game.
If someone can answer that question for me I will know if my theory might be right.
