Gunboat and drop outs

Hey Clint

I understand that in a gunboat game you will sometimes offer dropped
positions to other people already playing in that game. Is this the
case? I understand the need to keep things going, but isnt it a
huge advantage to be playing THREE nations in a gunboat?

I'd suggest that you charge everyone an extra £1 or £2 per setup per
position for gunboat games, and then if you get a dropout you can
somewhat subsidise a new and external player (I assume that this
remains your 1st port of call to fill dropped gunboat positions)

Cheers

Yes

Not yet; short answer. Long answer: What we first do is attempt to get others to pick up the duo of nations. This sometimes works. If that doesn't work then we then offer the nations to team-mates.

We've not had a game finish yet with this rule in play so we can 't be sure of the impact it actually has. Without pickups I can attest to the fact that that team does very badly though and is severly handicapped. However, in most cases the nation has been SSed for a turn or two and players who are likely to drop are less likely to put in a lot of effort into the game so their nations are also reduced in playability and strength. (I can attest to that as a player!)

(There's an ongoing debate about this on the forum). So what I want to do is see what impact it has and then make a ruling. Without players able to pick up nations that are dropped I think GB suffers badly from drop outs though. There might be a middle ground.

One idea is to inform everyone if this happens and the new trio that is available. One slight problem with that is that often when one nation of a duo dies the player drops - so it would give the information away about the second nation in the duo. (Note this is the situation that most often occurs - ie a nation dies).

I'd suggest that you charge everyone an extra £1 or £2 per setup per
position for gunboat games, and then if you get a dropout you can
somewhat subsidise a new and external player

What do GB players think about this?

Yes

I've no real issue with this as long as everyone in the gunboat game
is informed of the new trio combinations.

Obviously I'd prefer if no one had 3 nations but I'd also want to
ensure all nations are run with no SS turns/drops-outs. In an ideal
world both of these requests would be possible but it obviously isn't
an ideal so something has to give somewhere. My preference is indeed
that the nation is picked-up rather than SS'ing.

Well with the price changes, the set-up for Gunboat is now 28 quid
which is already quite steep. Increasing it further would deter me
from starting new games....especially so soon after the previous
price increase.

No. If someone sucks that bad that they can't manage their duo of
nations, they shouldn't be playing Gunboat. It'll weed out stupid
players on their own.
