They’re too out of the way and can provide too much of an advantage to either side. As FP they can easily KO the QA and invade Mordor from the east. As DS they can easily move up the eastern part of the map and head into Rhun, especially w/o Rhun to help the NM.
Ahhh… But the Rangers/Noldo/Rohan are more than capable of fighting the Duns/WW combo. And this is Gunboat, remember, so allies aren’t talking to eachother. So who knows what will happen, right?
I came to realize that in GB, you have to have personal pride in how well you play your own positions. I’ve come to expect the “unexpected” of my allies and sometimes you run into the “weakest link in the chain” phenomena. Sometimes the “unexpected” works out very nicely…
It seems to me this might be one of the only ways to try new things with your nation…i’ve been playing for some time and I’m not completely sold on the S&T for various nations…that being said when I get into “normal” 1650 games I fell compelled to go along w/ the team and do anything to achieve the team win even at the expense of things I think I’d like to try…maybe I should be more selfish but I think an environment such as this at least at a glance would allow more of the independant thinking I’d like to try…
I’ve played 4th age for the same reasons, I’d like to try some things with nations but the problem there is that they aren’t like 1650 nations and they don’t have the same overall dynamic anyway…
I’d like to hear what other players think about this 'cause I surely don’t want to get “bad” mouthed because the BS didn’t show up in the Ithil pass on turn 5 like they would have in a grudge or a “normal” 1650 game…
I read comments to the effect that newbies need not apply because they won’t do “what’s expected” of them. Well, I see that but isn’t the point of Gunboat to not have that level of coordination and to get back more of the way it was when I first played years ago…the 3x5 cards and fog of war stuff…granted you get the names of the guys but since you can’t talk to them it really doesn’t matter.
As far as 2950 is concerned, and barring the little chat with Ben where we’ll agree to disagree, I concur it is not for complete newbie.
It requires at least a passing knowledge of each nation’s strenght and weakness. Also some passing data about the way maps are spread and where the off map/ruins lies.
That said, with Automagic and the rulebook at hand the above information is easily within reach on the net, so someone with but one game under the belt can join up.
But oh I am an newbie abd can you give me tips on certain nations does eem to both be against the spirit of the game and also since it gives away the position, the game itself.
My money says the person who did that is playing those nations and I would love to be on the other side
