The rules state: "No influencing, stealing, cursing ETC on or from or to your team." I think Clint would say that the ETC means any other "aggressive act".
Here's my question (which Clint knows I am going to the list on):
Is doubling a friendly nation's character an aggressive act? In a team game it certainly isnt - but what about a gunboat game?
I have my views but would be interested in yours...

I don't see Doubling a character of the same aliance
as an agressive act. After all, he's not allowed to
perform agent actions against you that would harm
you. Therefor, preventing him from doing thing that
he's already prevented from doing is not agressive.
However, when I read the rules of Gun Boat, I thought
I saw a rule that you were not allowed to try to
communicate with members of your alliance. Clearly,
doubling a friendly character is an attempt to get
info from that player's characters.
I think it violates the intent of the Gun Boat, if
not the letter of the rules. This should be addressed
in future games with an additional rule specifically
preventing doubling characters.
For any current games, it is a tougher question. Any
currently doubled characters should be cleared, but
I don't see any other punishment due the person.
Afterall, isn't any game the study of the rules and
trying to figure out how to make them work for you.
On a similar topic, a recent News from Bree had an
article about a recently ended Gun Boat game where the
Harad player mentions shipping 23 gold to a team
mate from a recently captured pop, in an attempt to
communicate with the player that nation 23 now owns
said pop. I see this as clearly against the rules of
"no trying to communicate". In fact, any product
shipments from non-capitals should be forbidden for
just this reason. It communicates that the ally
now/still owns the pop in question. Yes, a transfer
from a capital shows where your capital is....
Hopefully 99% of these shipments will be to get
products to a place that you assume they will be
helpful, and not an attempt to give information to
an ally.
The rules state: "No influencing, stealing, cursing
ETC on or from or to your team." I think Clint
would say that the ETC means any other "aggressive
act".

the list on):

I would say that doubling a friendly character would be ok. The act
is not technically aggressive, in my opinion, since the only benefit
of doubling beside information is to prevent character actions from
effecting you.
First i must say that i do hind dubeling frindly as well as enemy char shut be aloved.
but then how woud the british react if it was known that CIA was recruting MI5 agents as doubels.

I would say "definitely not". You double friendly characters in order to
help protect against enemy doubling and to get extra information in case
your team mate forgets to get in touch. Neither of these reasons are
aggressive.
Of course, you could argue that you could get around the diplomacy/contact
restrictions of gunboat by doubling everything in sight, but by the time
you've done that the game is going to be over anyway, so not really an issue
either.
I personally have doubled friendly characters in a (completed) GB
game. Far from this being an aggressive action, I consider it to be
an overtly friendly one. My doubling him means that he is NOT doubled
by an enemy nation.
I also believe the spirit of the GB game is to limit actual
communiation between nations, not to completely ban information
gathering about each other. IMO, sending hidden messages in your
transfers crosses this line; doubling your friend does not.

Hi all
For those of you that play Gunboat......:
The rules state: "No influencing, stealing, cursing ETC on or from
or to your team." I think Clint would say that the ETC means any
other "aggressive act".

Does that come under the heading of friendly agents anyway ?
I think doubling any character is an important part of the information gathering process and should be allowed in GTunboat games.
I think that any in-game communication should be allowed, so long as it is about the game; you can't name characters with your own name or E-mail address but there's nothing to stop you naming a character "NG needs money" and sitting him on a friendly capital. After all, in the 'real' Middle Earth, characters could send out messengers to allies. Just think of Denethor sending out the Red Arrow to summon the Rohirrim or Elrond telling Aragorn to "Remember the Paths of the Dead".

It's not allowed at present.

Neither is this allowed. It's specifically in the rules that you cannot do this.
