Gunboat variant

I’ve been kicking this around. I’ve just started playing Gunboat, and miss the “Communication between players” but relish the “Fog of War” not knowing what your teammates know/are doing. What if one thread per game were to be opened for communications? Anyone on either team could post, but only on that one thread. Lock it down to maybe so many words and entrees per turn.

It would essentially open an avenue for banter among the players.

And what one player writes all players could read.

Thoughts?

Sounds interesting.

So what restrictions would be placed? If we keep the fog of war the no files could be exchanged between players. Would we be allowed to send PM’s via the board? What about nation identities? You need to follow up with this.

Ahhh, restrictions, in my small world, yes PM? Personal Messages?

My restrictions would be two -

  1. All messages would have to state what nation you are, no lying.
    No, I’m Sparticus
    No, I’m Sparticus
    No, …
  2. No coded messages, you know the ones where only two of you have the special captain crunch decoder rings. IOW no talking about strategies used in previous games. Meaning you can’t write, Ben use the same attack plan we used in game 25 on turn 12.
  3. So many letters per message (think 3x5 card, say 300 letters).
  4. Limited number of posts by player per turn (say 4).

I guess I am just looking for a little fun between players. You could use the message board to banter back and forth. Let out limited information/strategy or misinformation.

And are you looking for 1 message string per side… or a free for all…

with viewing restictions or open to all…

and what about gunboat players who don’t subscribe to this list… for whatever reason…

I think this sounds like a brilliant idea! What about the only restriction should be that the players could only communicate on this string, but could write anything they wanted. Tactics the enemy also knows (PSSSH!!, LET’S MOVE TO 2927 EVERYBODY!) really isn’t very effective. Haven’t thought this one complete through, but think that a string for GB communication would be great! Also think posting your nation should be allowed (not much idea posting otherwise IMHO)

It does sound interesting, but I think it may have a fatal flaw: once players have been identified on the message boards, what’s to stop the unscrupulous ones from contacting each other privately? Is there a way our monikers could be masked on the message boards so that we wouldn’t know who each other are? If so, then I think that would be a fantastic way of communicating in GB.

To Leonidas

I think the same is to stop the unscrupulous ones from contacting eachother in normal GB - honour. I guess it is only an issue with two friends ending up in the same GB and they can contact eachother and ask what the other play anyway. I wouldn’t think it would be a problem, but could be mistaking…

One simple way to reduce the “I know who that is” and eliminate unscrupulous contact in the GB variant would be to actually send the messages directly to the GM (via E-Mail), who then would verify the content (ie no identifying personal remarks) then pass them along to the appropriate player(s). Of course, this might introduce some arguments of “GM bias” - but seems to be a fair solution. Then it would be easy to make a limit on the length and number of messages - say 1 200 word message to one Nation pair (either Ally or Enemy) per turn.

I reckon it would work fine posting here, as much as you want or limit to 200 words per turn (per player). Hex count as one, “don’t” would be 2 words for example.
