Hostage question

Do inactive nations retain captured/kidnapped characters or are they released when the nation collapses? Small minds want to know.

The old timer “Orillion Darkblade” should know the answer.

I’m not sure, would be good to know.

Ha!..very true, but for some reason I’ve never had the need to know. My guess is they are held as long as the captor is alive. Just because I’m an old timer doesn’t mean I’ve done everything. I’ve played well over 100 games and still run into new things to learn. I have just recently ran into a few new issues, since my rules edition is about 10 years old.

Hostages do remain hostage on the char who is holding them after the nation collapses, and even keep them if you decided to go and recruit the chars again. For how long time I am not sure though, but I have done this about 5 turns after the nation collapsed and the agent still had all his hostages. Hope this helps.

Per, can you confirm this? I’ve just had the opposite result – had a hostage released on the turn the enemy nation went belly-up, after being held for several. Coincidence? Hmm…

Anyone else seen this either way?

My experience has been that when a nation collapses all hostages of that particular nationality automatically escape. Presumably, this is to aid their recruitment by allies. However, when a nation collapses, the hostages that it (the collapsed nation) is holding remain hostages.

I currently have hostages of a nation that collapsed…they did not escape.

However, I do not know if a collapsed nation releases its hostages.

Yes nanook, I can confirm that when nation X collapses, the agents of nation X do not let their hostages free. I recrutied the agents from nation X about 5 turns later with nation Y, and they still had their hostages.

Thanks, Per. That’ll teach me not to confuse coincidence with game mechanics!

Well, probably not, but it should…
