How do ransoms work?

I have a hostage character whose report now shows "xxx gold was demanded for
his release" in regular type.

below this in bold for all hostages is ...."No gold ransom demanded at this
time"

can someone please explain the discrepancy?

also, If I read the rules correctly, ANY nation can ransom my character and
its random who will do so if multiple offers are made, correct?

so I have no guarantee of success?

RD: It looks to me as though somebody has made an offer of xxx gold for the
character indicated, but not for the others.

RD: Not sure what you mean here. Are you trying to sell (ransom) a hostage
whom you hold or buy (ransom) one of your own characters who is held by the
enemy?

Surely the highest bid succeeds, if there is more than one?

I've ransomed (bought other nations') characters a couple of times myself
and here's how it works. You contact the player with a hostage to sell
(ransom) and agree a price, say 10k. He issues the 655 Demand ransom order
for 10k, and the SAME turn you issue the 660 Offer ransom order 10k. This
allows no time for any other nation to screw up your deal with a higher bid.

In practice, it's very rare for characters to be ransomed, because the
character doing the buying has to possess both co and ag skill, he must be
in his capital, and the gold must be available. This is quite a bundle of
prerequisites! It is HIGHLY unlikely that any co/ag in a capital is going
to try to outbid you unless he KNOWS a 655 Demand order is going to be made.

Hope that helps,

Richard.

That's YOUR character held hostage by someone else

below this in bold for all hostages is ...."No gold ransom demanded at this
time"

Referring to the hostages of others which you hold.

can someone please explain the discrepancy?

The nation holding your character is offering to sell him. You have hostages of other nations but you have not set any prices on them. Or if I have misread you about where this information is on your turn sheet, it may mean that your hostage was bought and sold between two enemy nations during the turn.

also, If I read the rules correctly, ANY nation can ransom my character and
its random who will do so if multiple offers are made, correct?

Yes, but if it's your enemies were switching him around, they'll have made the demand and the offer on the same time, and the hostage will have been transferred without you knowing that the auction was taking place until it's too late.

so I have no guarantee of success?

If the offer is still standing, it's like any RL auction, highest bidder wins.
