Which swamp part are we talking about here, the one just past Bree or
the marsh of the dead ?
I remember the first time I read this I really struggled to stay
interested up until the point where they reached weathertop. Once they
had reached Rivendell and started on the quest I really enjoyed it.
Favourite parts for me were Moria,
the whole Rohan/Gondor part and the final journey into Mordor. I loved
Gollum
and I'm really glad that they're getting the person who did the voice in
the BBC radio version to do him in the film. IMHO he -is- Gollum.
The Silmarillion is also a good read although I don't think I have ever
read the opening couple of chapters (before the awakening of the Elves).
One problem it has is the lack of a central character which makes it
read more like a history book, but then I guess this was the idea.

Last night I was dreaming of LotR. Working too hard you might say - but I
am curious to hear what you all actually thought of the book. To me it has
a sort of phyrric victory for the good guys in the book, especially the
major characters. I personally love hobbits/halflings - having played some
in RPGs (Cherry the arsonist in a Hero campaign based on a chatty Indiana
Jones - whip and all) - and so this helped me think of their societies
structure and everything else to do with their way of life.I found the swamp thing boring, boring, boring. Having read the book a few
times now (I think 4 or five but lose track as I read a LOT), it has not
lost it's charm - and rightly so. If I has some spare time then I think I
would read it again as it has been a few years since I read it last. (The
only other book other than the Hobbit, worth reading really for
story-telling is the Silmarillion IMHO).When Frodo comes home, and is totally ignored the most poignant part of the
book for me - although Gollum is fun as well.Well back to work,
Clint
