maetzings works

From: "Laurence G. Tilley" <
That's odd, because I've helped several people on this over the years, and
that has always been the answer.
If it is, the usual answer is to change your screen resolution - not
specifically the size - to 16 bit colour I think in Windows 95 or 98

You've got it Laurence. Alan Jeffery mailed me off list
with the advice to go with 16 bit colour and the program
ran. I'm sure there are other combinations of resolution
and colour that work, as my laptop has a lower resolution
but higher colour... Without hitting and missing the
formula, just go with the 16 colours - restart - do your
mapping - and then reset your resolution for the rest of
your turn planning.

Thanks to all for the help!

So what is the all-around best program by the list

That's probably a bit like asking what football team is best. IMO Alex Maetzing's is the best. It is better than others than I've looked at, though my opinion must be coloured by the fact that it's the one I'm used to and it's the one used in all the team games I play - there's a lot to be said for using a program and a format that everyone's familiar with.

There was one other prog I looked at once which had one or two features that Alex's didn't, but I did not consider it superior, as it also lost one or two of his features. Things I like about it are:

Clear mapping
Ease of updating it each turn
Pop history feature
Ability to quickly produce a full pop report for team mates who don't want the map
Easy, elegant data format (OK, once you've learnt it and taught your team mates)
Representation of ruins and degraded pops
12 hex radius movement planner (proud of this, as it was me who asked him to put one in)

But you will find enthusiasts for the other main contender too. The best alternative that I've seen IMO though is Mark Seward's mapping by Excel Spreadsheet. It's not actually a program I don't think, just an eye popping demonstration of what a clever chappy can do with Excel.

I wonder what's going to happen with the new MEPBM prog. Will it be playtested and open for improvement suggestions? I'd be reluctant to change unless it's going to incorporate all the features I enjoy in Alex Maetzing's prog.

Greetings!

I'm a MEPBM (1650) player here in Brazil since August 2000, and there
is one player here who is developping a program using Java which can
import most of the information from the PDF turn file. This program
is called MEPPA (Middle Earth PBM Player Assistant) and it's in its
1.1.11 beta version.

It has tons of resources, like:

- A manually editable map (but it is updated automatically when you
import a turn)
- It indicates on the map where are the characters (including
dragons, I don't know about NPCs)
- It also indicates where are the PCs, their sizes, forticifations
and goods production (all these are updated everytime you import a
new turn)
- You can do your orders in MEPPA, too. It checks the orders for
errors and movement distances

There are a lot more that MEPPA can do. There is only one problem (at
least, up to now): MEPPA is 100% in Portuguese.

If you want to take a look at it, you can download it at my PBM site
(about 1.42MB):

http://www.livrovermelho.kit.net/MEPPA-v1_1_11.zip

It requires JRE - Java Runtime Enviroment 1.4.1.

Hi!

Just to complement your message about MEPPA, it imports NPCs also.
It doesn't identify if the NPC is Dark Servant or Free People, for
  instance.

Elrond, will appear with the light sign. Akhorahil, will appear with

By the way, Ill talk to Jorge Aguilar (MEPPA programmer and member of this
group) suggesting a MEPPA english version. The orders numbers are the same,
but not their names. For example: 810 MovChar is 810 MovPers in Portuguese
(because character is 'personagem' in Portuguese).

Ah, thanks all.

I don't think I'll be attempting Portugese (genus Brazilian) any time
soon. Hard enough speaking English (genus American) and semi-passable
French. Don't even ask about Spanish - I can try, but it's not pretty.
 And English (genus British) is not much better ...

Thanks again to Mary, Marcelo, and Mike for the responses.

Anyone have a copy of said program they'd be willing to share?

Hi!

Just to complement your message about MEPPA, it imports NPCs also.
It doesn't identify if the NPC is Dark Servant or Free People, for
instance.

Elrond, will appear with the light sign. Akhorahil, will appear with
the eye sign. But Saruman, appears like: ? Saruman, because the
alignment is not specified in the PDF.

But you can configure it, editing the aligniment of the character.

Mary

Anytime, Benjamin!

I've sent an e-mail to Jorge suggesting an english MEPPA version. there is
no problem in translate the program. The REAL problem is having some turns
in english, because the program search for strings in the PDF file. So, the
Portuguese version search for texts in Portuguese, and I (dont know about
the other brazilian players) have never seen any turn in English before.
Just articles and the MEPBM (1650) rules...

Marcelo,

I'm in the USA, clicked on your link to your mapping program and got
a DNS error, can't find address. I'm really interested, anyway you
can help?

Scott

Greetings!

I'm a MEPBM (1650) player here in Brazil since August 2000, and

there

is one player here who is developping a program using Java which

can

import most of the information from the PDF turn file. This program
is called MEPPA (Middle Earth PBM Player Assistant) and it's in its
1.1.11 beta version.

It has tons of resources, like:

- A manually editable map (but it is updated automatically when you
import a turn)

There is only one problem

(at

least, up to now): MEPPA is 100% in Portuguese.

If you want to take a look at it, you can download it at my PBM

site

(about 1.42MB):

http://www.livrovermelho.kit.net/MEPPA-v1_1_11.zip

It requires JRE - Java Runtime Enviroment 1.4.1.

Best regards,

DNS error... wierd... anyway, this weekend I'm changing my homepage from
this server to another in the USA, and the URL will change to
www.livrovermelho.com (unfortunately, my site will remain in Portuguese,
but asap I'll make an English version).

Besides, you can inform me you private e-mail (or any other) and I can send
the file attached to you. My e-mail is mcutin @ pobox.com (without the
spaces).

Kind regards,
