We're looking for wargame or RPG/Game mags in the US that we can advertise
in. Any names (and/or contacts) that you guys have got?
Clint
Have you tried Dragon magazine? I subscribed to this years ago when it was a big glossy US mag available in the UK as well. It was run by one of the big RPG companies, TSR I think, but had contributions and ads from all over. I expect it's still running but I haven't looked for it for a long time now, just not enough time.

Dragon is still running, now owned by Wizards of the Coast they bought TSR
out a few years back.
Haven't read it in years but i imagine it would fit the bill.

WOTC no longer owns it. And it's probably not a good vehicle for MEPBM in
terms of value for money.
I would suggest contacting Alan How (alan.how@which.net) who has more
contacts about the US gaming scene than you can shake a stick at.

Good feedback - other ideas for advertising very welcome. Our plan for Mags was to have us and a consortium of 3 other PBM firms buy a 12 issue slot of adverts. With that we would attempt to get a PBM section for that period and possibly reviews - hence the players that are new to this gaming format would be introduced slowly.
Flagship (and RIP PaperMayhem) have brought us players but we've pretty much saturated Flagship.
Marketing is not our strongest point so any assistance those in the "know" would be very welcome.
We do Ebay from time to time.

Were it my company, I would put one of your maps, a rulebook etc up
for auction on Ebay every week. There is a Tolkien following out
there and it has its own category. I would put the items in multiple
related categories like Magic The Gathering and other CCG's. In the
description I think you can write up to 500 words which should give
people an idea of what it is all about. You could also sign up for
the ebay account with your public email address and then all
correspondence would be routed to where you normally receive email.
This correspondence would go through ebay and be title stamped
with "Question for seller" so you could probably gauge how successful
this endeavor was.
The main thing would be not to blatantly use this as a marketing
vehicle only. I am fairly certain that if you sell the products (the
one rulebook, one map per week) you are not in violation of any terms
of service agreements.
Anything under $9.99 is around $0.30 cents per item per category.
I think you could expect a hundred hits per week but you may be
looking for a much bigger audience.
I use to play the Avalon Hill board games back in 70's (still have a
almost new copy of Third Reich in my closet) but I never read more
than a few of the Dragon mags.
I would also suggest that you do as earlier mentioned and go more
towards the electronic medium. Find free sites that cater to players
from Everquest, Star Wars, DAOC, Shadowbane etc (the MMORPG group)
There also some pay support sites that (may/use to) sell ads. One for
Everquest is http://everquest.allakhazam.com/
I don't know if any of these pay sited are worthwhile from a cost
effectiveness standpoint but there use to be 50,000 to 100,000 people
that played Everquest.

BTW, there is a publication available in most US libraries called the SRDS
(Standard Rate something something) which lists every single publication in
the US along with their advertising rates. (Don't ask how I know this stuff,
it just accumulates until I need it!) Someone in a biggish US city could
therefore compile a fairly definitive list for you.
I know that whenever I go into a magazine store in NYC I come out with a
bunch of mags I've never heard of but which look interesting. The US is such
a wonderful hotbed of niche publishing: it's mind boggling!
Anyone know anything about this and able to point us in the roughly right direction to check out? Sounds an interesting avenue to persue.

Where all did GSI advertise in America around '95 and '96? For the life of
me, I can't even remember how I came across this game. I didn't have a
computer yet. It may indeed have been Dragon magazine. Or was it "Realms
of Fantasy" ? I believe that mag is still around, too.
As far as not getting a big response with past GSI advertisements. . . I
imagine there are a lot more LotR fans out there now (thanks to the movies)
and advertising may draw more notice in previously-tried venues.
You could always sell "startup sets" (book, map, game) on Ebay!! It
would be virtually free advertising . . .

You might even try a Chess magazine! I bet half of us who play this game
enjoy playing Chess . . . I often describe this game to curious friends as
"chess on steroids with 25 players".
This may beg the question "who has actually purchased a Chess magazine?"
Well, I have. Once.
Another thought . . . Judging from all the laywers I meet in this game,
maybe you should just send flyers out to Law Firms and Law Schools?
On a serious note, print up some nice little 3x5 (that's American inches)
flyers and mail them to us players . . . interested participants could tack
them up on the "looking for players" boards in their local game shops. Or
better yet, stick a PDF of a small postcard-sized ad on your website that we
can print out locally and hang up in game shops. I don't know how many
players would participate . . . I certainly would.
Movie fans are not necessarily players of games I am afraid. We do sell on ebay - any more ideas?! Keep them coming.

Sure why not. I game at a shop that maintains a bulletin board for
just that purpose.
