Hi,
If one of my mages can i.e. cast Sickness (he got it as a starting
spell), can he learn Curses without having explicit access to the lost
list?
If the mage knows an 'average' spell from a list, could he research any
'hard' spell from the same list, or must he first research an 'easy'
one?

As far as I know, you can not learn lost list spells without an artifact,
even if you have a spell of the list as a pick....
To the second question:
You can learn any hard spell if you have an average one but again not if it
is a lost list, then you need an access artifact or nation bonus
