Well, I'll send my character back this turn to have a go but I won't be
able to send an answer until the turn after that, so it'll be probably
be best for you to try Eol, and then I'll try the next guess.

sob. its isn't thingol.
In the presence of an intimidating magical power, xxxx
stood forth and answered, "Thingol." Nothing
happened. The walls seemed as if they were still
waiting.
I'll wait for Eol to be tried, or shall I do it next
turn ?
thanks
din
p.s sorry about the evil bit clint, but can I bribe
you to check the answer ? Maybe its a dodgy riddle
with no reply ???

Er,
good question. I could try the Iarwain suggestion (another name for
Tom B) of Simon's.

Ah, you have short memories. Indeed Simon provided the correct name,
but it was my suggestion
Don't forget that Thingol had a few other monikers: GreyCloak,
Singollo (I think).
Well, good luck

I said my memory was fading! I need to brush up my references - I just hope
it works as the answer.
Cheers

RD: Actually, Iarwain Ben-adar was his Elven name. The Dwarves called him
Forn, and Men called him Orald.

Well, two more attempts were made this turn and both were wrong.
I didn't go for Eol in the end, but instead we tried 'Orald' and 'Forn'
as alternative names for Tom B. The next one I'll try is
'Iarwain Ben-adar'.
Just as a reminder, the riddle is:
In a forest lived he
as hearty as the proverbial tree.
During the struggle he helped as he could
but, in the end, he did as he would.
with
Fangorn, Quickbeam, Radagast, Legolas, Thranduil, Tom Bombadil,
Celeborn, Old Man Willow, Ghan-buri-Ghan, Beorn, Amroth, Maeglin,
Treebeard, Gandalf, Thingol, Forn and Orald as the wrong answers so far.
Duncan (now thumping head onto desk repeatedly in frustration)
Easy now Duncan don't do anything drastic, like starting thumping your head
on your rock samples (one does get such a headache)
Why dont you put it into an assignment for the new batch of students? And
those that starts out with "Who is Tolkien?" get them transfered to
something else, they never make real geologists
Henning
a geologist thats always brings a Tolkien book in field ;-).
Hi Din,
on the vague off chance you were still trying to figure out this
riddle, I have yet another -wrong- answer. It isn't Iarwain Ben-Adar.
Between myself and a team mate we have tried all of Tom's alternative
names with no luck.
I've just about given up now, though I'll try that Eol guess this turn
before moving out.
