Question raised concerning the Last Alliance (ME44): What if the Dark Lord
nation goes bankrupt but still holds Barad-dur and Sauron is still alive?
I presumed, and Clint confirms, that as things stand, this would result in
the Dark Lord nation being eliminated and an automatic Free win.
We both agree this is unsatisfactory. It runs contrary to Tolkien and to
the spirit of this scenario in particular. I mean, since when did Sauron
have to worry about gold? As a Free player, I don't want to win in such a
manner. I want to win with a grand climactic battle like it says in the
book!
Clint says he will go with players' wishes on this, so if you (players) have
any ideas or opinions on this, let's hear them.
1) Dark Lord automatically gets enough gold to keep his economy afloat?
Very unsatisfactory - the player could bankrupt his nation every turn and
still stay in!
2) Dark Lord automatically gets a whip-round from his fellow nations? Just
as unsatisfactory - the other DS players would have something to say about
that!
3) If Dark Lord goes bankrupt, ask Harle to hand-mod his orders as necessary
to keep him alive, even disbanding troops, retiring characters where
necessary.
4) Perhaps just leave things as they are? If they are aware that the Dark
Lord nation CAN be eliminated thru bankruptcy, ending the game with a Free
win, surely each and every other DS would do their utmost to keep him
solvent?
Anybody got any better ideas?
Richard.

Game over. I would possibly allow it that if Barad Dur was in the control
of an active nation though. Seems okay then (Note change there Richard to
my earlier email).
Happy to go with the players here though. Can you ask?

Um...as a neutral observe I believe that the DL should
be susceptable to bankruptcy. I quote the following
passage from the Sillimarillion (great songs):
'Thus did Sauron see the big OD on his account and
then did he say "It's a fair cop" and headed way out
east (passing two very comic fellows heading in the
other direction)'

As a DS in the LA scenario, and a player in general, I
also agree that this is not in the spirit. But it
must be set up so it is not abused. Perhaps gold
being used from other DS' surplus' automatically to
cover it? He is, after all, the Dark Lord. Perhaps
that way the other DS will make sure he's not screwing
it up too bad.

I think this is the best idea. As one of the DS players, I can safely
say that we are quite aware of the bankruptcy threat. We have economic
reports done each month, with tax rates etc, and who is in real dodo
(it's not the Dark Lord economically.
