ME Late Turns

Results for one of my games are now two days overdue and there’s been no word from Clint.

Is it just me? Are other people waiting for turns? If so, does anyone know what the problem is?

David

They had a coding meltdown last week, from what we heard in Game 83. Probably takes a while to recover from that.

I’ve heard from Clint so I know what the issue is. I think I preferred Rob’s cast iron deadlines.

Some players do, they're the ones who get their turns in on time. However, 1) we're doing a lot more coding with this "regime" and 2) I find that drop out rates are higher with hard deadlines. 3) I've had a few players want the hard deadline except when they're not able to get their turn in!

I have a lot of sympathy with a regime that reduces the number of dropouts. However, you need to try to be fair to all the players, not just those who, for whatever reason, can’t get their turns in on time.

The game I’m waiting for is now 5 days overdue. You might as well give up on deadlines altogether and just let people send in their orders when they feel like it.

I agree, having a game end because of a valid delay is not a good reason. You're assuming here, I think, that players are just not getting their turns in because they can't be bothered, it's not that.

The game I’m waiting for is now 5 days overdue. You might as well give up on deadlines altogether and just let people send in their orders when they feel like it.

I don’t post on here at all, but I feel obliged to comment on this nonsense. A turn was late - so what? Life happens and I’m sure most of us would like to see games continue where possible. We have all had games collapse due to drop outs and if we can avoid that, so much the better. No-one is suggesting delaying games by weeks, in fact, this is a rare instance in all the years I have been playing.

Let’s get on with the games and stop criticising the guys for trying to do the best they can. Most of us play these games for pleasure, not because we need to adhere to rigid strictures. If you don’t like it, don’t play. Simple.

Simple.

David,

I agree that the expectation is sometimes as worthwhile as the result. However, and I play many games by mail and have done so for far too many years, we do occasionally have to accept thaat real life intervenes and delays (and even errors) will occur. I’m just saying that we should let the guys get on with their jobs and do what they have been doing well for a long time. We have heard some reasons why delays have arisen, so we are not entirely in the dark.

I say, be cool. We have to wait a week for each GOT, so we must learn patience throughout our lives.

Chris.

As far as I can see it's an interesting debate. There's pros and cons to both sides. One feedback we had when we bought DGE from the guys in the US that our more flexible approach was better. Personally I try to do what I feel works best with the player base.

I certainly don't want to lose any players over it. I've found over the years that if I SS a player, invariably they drop out within a few turns. (There's many reasons that occurs and for now I'm not discussing that). That then means that the rest of the team suffers and consequently the entire game and players suffer The offset of that is that sometimes games are delayed, it's rarer than you think, but does happen. I makes strenuous efforts to get players to get their turns in before hand, and when the turn is due (you've no doubt seen the emails!) but even with my best efforst, the team-mates efforts etc it all gets delayed.

So that's why I've come to the conclusion that I have.

As an aside: So we used to have no-drop games, I found that it meant that there was a higher level of commitment but that it meant that when a player missed turns or dropped the game there was a higher level of angst. I recommend Grudge games for the full on "ME experience", it's hard tough on the players but the skill level is generally higher than individual or GB games.

Recently we've had some players with some major life issues affecting them and I try to do the best I can with them all. Occasionally after much debate I draw the line but I try to be flexible.

Clint
