When you look at the Declaration of Independence, Washington's Farewell Address to his army, the Franklin/Hamilton/Madison letters, which dating system do you see? I don't think we got it from the Algonquins.
When I entertain English friends and acquaintances over here, they are always struck by the survival of laws, offices and customs which are now extinct in England. Who knows? Sir Francis Drake might feel more at home here than in England.

I see, for example, "July 4th, 1776". I do *not* see "7/4/76"...

And, as a (very) frequent visitor to New England, I cannot think of one instance where I was struck by extinct English laws, customs or offices that have survived untouched in the former colonies...
