Who would ever do _that_??? (unless it came "bundled" with a computer, or
perhaps other software you wanted/needed)
It's called "BearShare" - check it out!

It's a "replacement" for Napster, only not only for music, but movies/videos,
t.v. shows, programs, etc.
BearShare is actually one of several "gnutella" based "user interfaces" (others
I know and have tried are Limewire and KaZaa), but BearShare, IMHO, is the
easiest to learn and use.
Just go to BearShare.com for a free download of their software (absolutely
free!).
It's different from Napster in that the "network" is composed of all of the
individual machines that are "connected" at the time. Napster had a "central
server" which was susceptible to being shut down. Now, with gnutella software
around, someone who felt their copyright (or other rights) was being infringed
would have to literally go to each and every computer w/ the software on it and
have it removed/confiscated/whatever. This is what Napster's lawyers tried to
argue (among other things), and now it's here! Variety is quite wide.

Reality is - and this is a biggie - intellectual property will soon be a thing of
the past. Information, in and of itself, will have a shelf life of about 15
seconds. The fact that much of Western (read: US) "wealth" is currently
represented by entities whose value primarily resides in intellectual property
_rights_ is something one might consider when thinking about the de-facto
unenforcability of these rights. Say what you will, but China will _never_ have
anything to gain from enforcing the laws aimed at protecting IP rights, and much
to lose (lots o' revenue, not to mention knowledge, in piracy for them). I use
China as an example, not meaning to single them out as the "main perpetrator" or
anything (trying to avoid _some_ controversy ... :).
Of course, there is a solution to the enforcability issue ... which is the same
solution for violence (domestic, international, terrorist, "residual," or
otherwise), the ridiculous overpopulation of our planet (the primary driver behind
the rest of this list, IMHO), environmental concerns, etc. ... Namely, a global
government. But that's another email. :)

Well I'm pleased someone asked you to explain. Can they do anything for
one's conscience?
_Great_ song (actually, it's "The Dream Police"). As for Orwell, well ... let's
just say he wasn't crazy.

Since that statement is pure fantasy, I cannot think of a better list on
which to post it.
Plus, I never knew that Middle Earth was caused primarily by overpopulation.
Thus, sex leads to PBM games. Now there's a selling point...

You mean the possibility of a global government is fantasy? Or that such a
system would possibly allow solutions to the problems mentioned?? The former is
probably correct. The latter _might_ be correct, but it's the only shot I can
think of for the problems I mentioned (or else "mother nature" will take care of
them for us - via plague, famine, war, etc. ...).
Plus, I never knew that Middle Earth was caused primarily by overpopulation.
Thus, sex leads to PBM games. Now there's a selling point...
:) (Love the leap of logic ... Heisenberg would've been proud ...
