There are "gals" who play this game too. You "noble" Brit-types might want

As far as I was aware Guys is the American for Guys and Gals...

I was aware - normally I go for the non-gender specific aspects - but having
just ordered a "Sub" and it taking around 8 attempts to get a @"$"$"$
sandwich I am shall return to my more cautious word use in future... :0-)

Anonymous posts are annoying, give everyone a login ID to the message
board tied to their account. Let anyone read the board, just no
posting without an ID, although you would need a Q&A area where
anyone could post for people interested in the game that have not yet
set up an account. The current divisions of the board are pretty
good, dividing it down on a per game basis would make the boards so
light traffic wise that all of the taunting and mocking would have no
audience, what fun is that.

I had a look. Some observations:

It's pretty.

Apart from that it has no advantages over this list or a simple old
fashioned Usenet Newsgroup, where you can read the stuff off-line.

There's a historical reason why message boards like this are not popular
in the UK - we've only recently had fixed rate Internet deals here. My
guess is some UK users would still be paying by the minute for the time
they are on line.

I noticed that the Deft board was _just_ a vulnerable to the chief
problem of this list (and some of the ME mail I receive) - the inability
of so many to change the subject line to be relevant to the content.
What could have been a nicely organised set of discussions on the
boards, was actually a mess of newbies saying "I'm just starting my
first game as the Dim Lord and..." in reply to discussions about
something else entirely. And there were the usual cretins, who can't
put their game number, and assume that everyone in every game is
interested in theirs.

So IMHO:
Best option: Set up a Usenet Newsgroup
2nd best: Stick with this list
Worst: Message board

I agree With you Laurence,

I've used many boards for many pbm games, (i even tried hosting one myself
for a game I was in and had all of 6 postings.)

I think the best options are exactly what you suggested.

Both allow offline reading and help can be accessed from any internet
account.

Paul:

In theory, I"m all for another 1-weeker, but in practice I'm interested in
one-week grudge games. "Regular" games essentially have random players, and
forming "random groups" into _teams_ takes too much effort. Further, for me
anyway, the "highest and best" form of MEPBM is the one where both sides comes
as close to "perfection" in terms of team-like play (communication,
coordination, etc.) as possible. This is far more easily accomplished in a
grudge context as you know that you start with 20 (or 24) players allready
commited to the basic team concepts. In "regular" one-week games, where
team-work is even more important than two-week games (if that's possible - I
would say that the best team in MEPBM wins, every time, no exception, period -
and that the definition of "team" has _nothing_ to do with player experience
or skill, necessarily), the pressure to "become a team" is intense, and often
the simple failure to do this can ruin the entire game. I'd rather get into a
game where the team-work aspect has a substantial "head start."

This being said, I _know_ that there are lots of players who simply prefer
one-week to two-week games, mostly from the US (North American?) player pool,
who would likely be interested in a one-week "normal" game.

My above rambling is simply intened to explain why I, despite my protestations
of affinity for one-week games, am going to pass at this time.

I'm coming to this board from the Deft side, and think the best way to
approach it is to look for the features that would be desirable for
the users.

It is most important to reach the maximum fraction of the player base
possible. A unified list does this.

The big negative on the DGE message boards is random anonymous
flamers, which is less of a problem on an email-tagged list.

The big positive of the boards is efficeint organization. I can get
an overview of the threads and see the ones I want. The email or
email digest formats are frankly unusable once the traffic gets too
high; some folks have the patience to methodically file things in the
right cubbyholes. Most of us prefer to use a format where some of the
filtering is done for us.

At minimum, I think the email list would benefit greatly if you could
view threads rather than viewing hundreds of unrelated emails in
chronological order. This would make web-based viewing as efficient
as using the message boards; in effect the folks who want the
stream-of-consciousness thing could get it while those of us who
prefer the message board style could just choose to view on the web
rather than getting emails or digests.

A usenet group? Only if we really want to get a lot of garbage
get-rich-quick solicitations and sleazy sex web site ads.

cheers,

Marc Pinsonneault
NK-55/Noldo-105

I really don't see what the problem is. I have a delete feature on my
computer. Perhaps others don't. I just had 60 e-mails come in, most of
them from the list. A lot of them say "Digest 360" "Deft player
accounts" "Scandinavian Pubmeet". None of these are relevant to me, so
I just click delete, delete, delete. And read those which do have a
subject line of interest to me. It takes a few seconds to delete all of
the irrelevant mails.

My only gripe is with the dozy few who change the substantially change
the subject of a thread, without changing the subject line to reflect
it.

...if you attend to it daily. If not it generates a lot of clutter.
Basically, I find the egroups threading software to be poor. I
resist having to do things manually that can easily be done with
the proper software. If I can view the list on the web and
messages can be placed in folders, I don't *have* to do anything but
click on the threads I'm interested in.

Also, I don't know if folks realize that egroups has been bought out
by Yahoo and there have been warnings on other lists that Yahoo may
make some changes that disrupt things; I can dig these up if folks are
interested in them.

I do like the absence of outside agitators and anonymous flames on an
email list. IMO folks can say whatever they like if they are willing
to stand behind their words, but we have ample evidence on the
middle-earth boards that anonymous messages rarely do good and
frequently generate a lot of nasty feelings.

I think the ideal solution would be an email list for announcements
and overall discussions of game strategy, and a registration-required
message board for specific games with folders for each game.
