middle earth question for people time on their ha nds

some people are affected differently when they look at the same thing (just
look at the reactions to modern art).

I think the trend for games are getting darker. While I'm not one for
banning games, I do think some concepts are beyond the understanding of
children, so some of the modern stuff shouldn't be played by children -
whereas D&D could be.

I once saw a funny comic where aliens landed, and it was a role-player who
was the only one who didn't freak out (since they were use to treating with
aliens from their games).

thanks
m

p.s just about all the (roleplaying or RPG) games have 'violence is the way
to solve your problems', and I would worry if people felt the same way in
real life. I remember Creatures being the last computer game I played that
didn't use violence (much), and I gave up on the game as boring.

Okay, maybe i was wrong when i said VAMPIRE RPG, but some
games that contain
occult references have a bad impact on those who don't play
the games with
the fact they are just for fun in mind.

Nathan.

Actually, I run a Vampire RPG with about 30 people in it,

and I would not

consider any of them to be "nutters". When not gaming, we

have a lot of
very

normal social activities, including community service.

People in prison,

considers to be

unacceptable, or they would not be in prison.

Yeh look at Doctor Who - scared the willies out of me as a kid, but now my
sister (aged 13 at the time) said she watched Predator and laughed...

Our RPG campaign has around one fight every 2 months (weekly sessions) but
non-the-less is quite dark.

Most of us in PBM know that we aren't going to be influenced to go out
and kill people because of it. My point was, that the press love to
find stories, and Fantasy Role Playing for Prisoners would make an
excellent headline. I remember that quite a lot of damage was done
years ago to the growth of Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, due to scare
stories in the press, which in turn stirred up the churches. I can
remember people playing AD&D in secret!

But it's not just violence, it's conflict. Virtually all stories and
games have conflict, without it... yes dull's the word. Good stories
have other balancing aspects too - comradeship, the triumph of heroes
through valour, intelligence and effort (if not of good over evil).
MEPBM has all these elements... But I still wouldn't try to explain that
to a Sun journalist!

D&D contains occult refefences! It does, and i saw a TV program once that
interviewed a few players who got into all sorts of wierd stuff after
playing it!

Yeh, roleplaying prepares you for all-sorts ofr situations in life!

I suppose it's ok to have violence in computer games, because role-playing
would have a greater impact as it seems more real and there are endless
possibilities...

Was i wrong? Vampires and the such are not things kids should play! The
funnest RPG i've played was Lord of the Rings Adventure Game from ICE (MERP)
and it's rules were easy and the game was fun!

I'm THE biggest Dr.Who fan in the world! I can name every episode in order
and more!
Predator was not scary! Nor was Scream! Not even the Texas Chainsaw
Massacre!

If you find it again... please inform us...

Aside: Wonders if Sam will let him play Gandalf? Actually Saruman is more
my style...

Heh there's a <sad> question: which character would you BE if you suddenly
you were 'ported into the WoTR?

Easy! I'd be Radagast the Brown and sit by a stream in Mirkwood, smoking the
pipe and listening to birdsong. Who needs war anyway?

RD: Easy, SAURON! Bad guys have the most fun, get all the best lines, all
the best costumes, can beat up whoever they like without having a conscience
about it. Human rights? Political correctness? Never 'eard of 'em. Yeah,
Sauron has gotta be the one.

Richard.

Heh there's a <sad> question: which character would you BE if you suddenly

b.e. would still BE b.e. What's the fun pretending 2b someone else ? <grin>

if b.e. was not b.e., then what b.e. would choose 2b, since the time frame b.e.
was teleported into was the WoTR time frame, b.e. would choose 2b a silvan
elf in mirkwood forest having fantastic orgies every night.

Yeh I guess they haven't got anything else to do - fancy living for
thousands of years what would you do?

This brought out the egos in the responses didn't it. I've gamed with
one of two MEPBMers who would be best suited to Bill the Donkey.

I hate it when those elves have orgies in Radagast's Mirkwood! They drink, they
smoke mushrooms, they fight, they make noise and disturb the birds, they leave
litter all over the forest and the elf girls won't even look at a worn old Istari
like me. Damn Saruman! He always got all the girls!
