Thanks, appreciate appreciation though I think more aimed at 'our
boys' in Kabul rather than lounge lizards like me. Despite all our
whingeing, on a scale of people to be top dog. USA 10 Mullah Omar 1.
You see, we agree...
Of course, back to business.....
The Economist Diary 2002, which is ideal for this kind of arguement,
states Economic Aid to developing countries as % of GDP in 2000 was
USA 0.10 against an average of 0.22 with Japan exceeding the USA
gross $ amount. Denmark, generous nation, is 1.06. Perhaps the figure
referred to in time was food aid? The Cook Islands have 20,000
population, just in case your interested.
The pollution arguement is incorrect. US pollutes more per unit of
production than other countries. Whilst I think direct comparisons
are misleading and the fuel costs inherent in sustaining economic
activity in a large country like the US are often forgotten the
reality is, the US pollutes more per head and more per unit of
production than anyone else. Whilst Kyoto may have not been entirely
fair, by walking away from it without NEGOTIATION, the US said we
don,t care what the rest of you think, we don't care if the world is
destroyed. We can do what we like.
Not very constructive or much of an example.
If the scientists are right, then global warming may destroy the
habitability of this planet. America, is most responsible for that
change because they produce the most gases that cause it. The whole
world got together to try and stop that destruction. It is in your
interest as residents that the planet is not destroyed!
I dont think anyone will argue about the pollution,
its a problem that everyone, but especially the US has
to deal with. I'm no tree-hugger, but the Kyoto thing
was not handled well.
But again, it appears the Economic Aid takes only
government outlays into account. I don't doubt their
accuracy, but I wonder of the billions raised
privately each year in the US that hit foreign shores,
and elsewhere too.
