I've been playing MEPBM for quite a while now, but I've only
just joined the MEPBM mailing list.
I've been playing mepbm for so long, I've remember when it really was Play
by Mail.
I agree with Mike about the point regarding giving characters almost
identical names. This sort of thing certainly appears like
gamesmanship to
me. It's unlikely to fool experienced players but it might well cause a
beginner to make a mistake.
I make more mistakes by copying my last turn orders, and forgetting about
the new person I named. I did that last turn in a 2950 game I was in.

If I had never played MEPBM before and was
thinking of doing so, hearing someone gloating over how they
had fooled
their opponent because they didn't realise a character had an
extra hyphen
or space in their name would certainly make me less likely to
want to play.
You would never know if you fooled the other player or not (unless you have
them as a double), since you don't get a report of the other person failing
since so-and-so wasn't there.
It would be good if Harlequin could prevent this sort of thing
happening,
though I'm not quite sure how it would be enforced and there
would probably
be a certain degree of subjectivity required.
I'm fine with names like that. IMO, its a poor choice of names, and it is
only going to hurt the player who does it.
On a separate issue I recently signed up for a game of 2950 &
1650 at the
same time. I was told by Clint (and I expected) that the 1650
game would
begin soon but that the 2950 one would take a long time to
fill up.
I recommended going into the deft bulletin board and seeing the number of
messages about the three games. I seem to remember Clint has already made a
mention in this mailing list about the popularity of the three versions.
I know
I'm in the minority, but I probably prefer 2950, so I was
wondering why it
is that 1650 is so much more popular.
I started in 2950, but it is expensive (in real money) for the first few
turns when you build up. In 1650 you can lauch a good size war at the start
of the game, so you feel you get your money's worth.
In terms of value of money, I would rather play 1650.
I also notice that 1650 has a lot more nation hints floating around in the
net than 2950, so I assume these aids would help players decide what to do.
I suspect that some of
it may be down
to the fact that most people started by playing 1650, so it's
what they're
used to, and anything else may feel a bit odd. One thing that
surprises me
about the relative popularity is that while I think 2950 is fairly well
balanced I've heard many people say that in 1650 DS will usually win.
The DS have agents with kills +20, and dragons that are easy to pick up
which do lots of damage. The free only have themselves. The typical odds
that get mentioned is that the DS win 66% of 1650, and 50% of 2950.
I havn't seem the odds for grudge games, but I expect the free improve the
odds since its hoped that they work together. A good free team in 1650 will
always beat a DS side that doesn't help each other.
Anyway, I would be interested in other people's views.

Hey everyone
In a game I am in, a nation has named:
Ren the Unclean
Ren-the-Unclean
Renthe Uncleanand presumably
Ren-the Unclean
Ren'the Unclean
Ren t' Uncleanetc etc
I am not wildly annoyed about it - but it seems like
gamesmanship to me - something that I would hope that
we could mandate Harlequin to intercept and prevent.
