Only pirates and sea monsters destroy ships -- but they DO destroy warships
first, it is NOT divided equally. Warships protect the transports they are
sailing with, IF they are part of the same fleet. So if 10 W and 10 T were
all in one fleet, and you lost 8 ships, you would have 2 W and 10 T remaining.
However, two separate navies, even travelling along the same path, can have
separate encounters -- so if instead you had one navy of 10 W and 2 T and
another navy of 8 T, and you got an encounter that sank 8 ships, if you won the
coin toss and had the encounter with the first navy you would lose 8 W, but
if you lost the coin toss and had the encounter with the second navy you would
lose 8 T (and say good-bye to the navy and all it was carrying, in that
case.)
In addition to damaging encounters, there are storms. Storms do not damage
ships -- instead they can blow a navy "off course" -- i.e. at some point
along the navy's movement path the encounter strikes and moves the navy in a
direction it did not intend to go. The navy then continues moving, but as it is
is now offset from its original course it will probably not arrive were you
wanted it to, which can be just an annoyance or it can be a serious
inconvenience.

Your understanding is correct, there is a percentage risk, and I don't
recall the exact %, but I want to say more like 10% than 30% ... Not sure what the
mechanics are on the damage allocation, but something sticks about a
"pro-rata" distribution (e.g., 20 total ships, 10 W, 10 T, carrying 2500 HI - suffer
50% loss - you'd end up w/ 5 W, 5 T, 1250 HI ... but that's just my best
guess).

Subject: [mepbmlist] Naval movement through open seas
What happens if a navy moves through open seas w/o artifact protection?
My understanding is there is a risk of ships being destroyed by weather,
monsters, or pirates?do the warships take the hit first?
what seem to be the odds of damage? (ie, 30% risk for each hex, etc?)
