Navy and Pop center combat

I have a question regarding navies and specifically the below part of the rulebook. I’ve a situation where I have my navy in a shore hex with my pop center with an enemy army also into the same hex.

So assuming the enemy army does an attack pop center, my navy will automatically anchor ships and allow my army to defend my pop center ? From the below part of the rulebook, it sounds like I’ve actually got to issue a defend order for that to happen.

“If the hex also includes a Population Centre belonging to the defending Navy, the ‘Defend’ order would also instruct the Navy to anchor ships, go ashore, and defend there as well.”

Can anyone here or from mepbm games clarify that point ?

If you do not activly defend you Navy will not join the fight unless you anchored your ships last turn. Anchoring your ships is not automatically done to defend your popcenters.

Another question on naval combat, can I presume navies will not automatically be blocked by enemy pop center fortifications, only enemy navies?

Paul, that’s right. The question usually comes up when moving downriver, and you’ve said it correctly: enemy fortifications won’t make you stop but enemy navies can.
