Long ago I'd proposed a 5-10 rule. Less than 5 turns, doesn't count against you or hurt you as the fate was set before you joined. 5-10, half count for/against you as you had some influence, but probably not full control. Longer than 10 turns, then it is your game as if you'd started with it.
What if What if What if...I thought you were the one arguing
against all the What if's...? Keep it Simple S.
Simple without discouraging people from pickup up positions that others have dropped.
If there is ANY good that can come from the ranking system I see it as discouraging drops (but only if it is designed to punish drops) and/or picking up dropped positions. It would be truely bad if the current proposal that encourages drops and discourages picking up positions were implimented.
Why would picking up a nation blind count against you? What
are you talking about? If it's Blind it's 50/50 whether
you'll win…the exact same odds as if you started a brand
new independent game…???
Incorrect. Many if not most dropped positions are in terriable shape on teams not doing so well. It isn't too hard for a person on a winning team to keep playing or find someone to turn it over to. If however, you're on a non-communicative team, that is getting its teeth kicked in, and looks to be a couple turns from folding.... much more likely to get dropped without being transferred.
Games, not nations, are what matters. If you're playing
1 nation in a game but your ally is playing 2 nations,
how do you calculate a "winning percentage" that takes that
into account? Or, do YOU want to reward only those who
pay more.....
If he had twice the "hand" in winning, having led two nations to my 1, than he should receive double the reward.
Note that he'd also receive double the drop for the loss.
As far as accusing me of rewarding those that pay more, that is absurd. The whole rating is designed to avoid doing that. If I play one position in 2 games and win half, I get a 50% rating. If you play 2 position in 2 games and win half, you get a 50% rating.
What I'd like to avoid is the situation where I pick up a dropped teammate's position, take the position to victory with my original position, and still have it count as only 1 win. If I lose 1 game with one nation, then play another game where I pick up a dropped teammate's position and win, I shouldn't have a 50% win rating. I lost one position. I won two positions.
..... then again, this would discourage me from picking up a teammate's position if it was starting to go against us. It would count against me twice...... Maybe I'll have to ponder...
Mind you, haven't heard anyting definitive from the company
regarding late declaring neutrals...but I'd expect that
personality/behaviour anomolies (that's what they are...)
aren't worth drafting special rules for. Some may think
that there are massed hoardes at the gates just itching to
"work the system" for their own benefit, so they can run
home to their girlfriends (chat rooms...?) showing off their
MEPBM Player Rankings placing. Eh, all the power to them,
they usually go away soon anyway.
Why have a ranking system if the goal is not to score well? If the goal is to score well, then why would anyone assume that people will not "work the system" to achieve the goal?
