For my money, it's got to be "Elwe", or "Thingol" (same person). The
"ancient call" was perhaps the summons of the Valar to the elves to come
dwell with them . . . Elwe/Thingol remained behind because of his love for
Melian. What was "held at bay" was maybe the War of the Jewels . . . in
which Thingol/Elwe was slain. Why was it "held at bay"? His bride, Melian,
had cast a harm-protection enchantment on the realm they lived in (Doriath)
which just happens to be the home of the Sindar, or GREY Elves.

"West of the middle" sounds to me like western middle earth. "Grey
Havens" maybe?
Speaking of Riddles, this one has been bugging me for a while. I'm
clueless. Thanks, -Russ

There is a small subterranean cave where the passage of time has seemed to
stop. There is a sense of power
about the place. On one wall you see enscribed in runes and glyphs of power:
d r k n n a l t a o h n i
The essence of power seems to await just a one or two word answer to the
riddle...
I think it may be Falas, because I seem to remember
Morgoth moving down the river Gelion to try to go into
the Grey Havens.

Been several "middles".
During the 1st Age, the Blue Mountains was the
"middle", after the
ruin of Beleriand the Misty Mountains became the new
"middle".
And the Grey Havens was never overrun by anything,
unlike the
Beleriand parts which was, which in my mind rules it
out.
except it asks for a place "Where dwelt the grey". But it could be
Doriath, yeah. The Girdle of Melian did keep Morgoth away for quite
a while, but it was dwarves which sacked Doriath and destroyed it
which doesn't fit with the "swallowed by that held at bay" part.
Yes, the second line asks for a "where" yet the third line seems to ask for
a "who". Plus, a "where" can't be "in love". Confusing. Guess that's why
it's a "riddle". Let us know how it comes out!

LINDON...located west of Ered Luin...High Elves dwelt there in
second, third and fourth ages. The Grey Havens were in Lindon.
In SA 1700 Gil-galad, fearing attack from Sauron during the War of
the Elves and Sauron, appealed to Numenor for aid, and Tar-Minastir
sent a fleet to Lindon, which enabled Gil-galad to drive Sauron out
of Eriador. Forces from Lindon were also part of the Last Alliance.

Definately a hard one. Here are the ONLY words you can make using
the o and u as marked with their respective accent. Having no E or S
really limits the options...
Annun
Dur
Lhun
Loni
Norui
Rhun
Tuk
Udun
Interesting find...all letters spell "Olorin and Tharkun" but require
an extra R. Both of those names are names for Gandalf. Maybe the
extra R rubbed off with age, or is on the floor of the cave.
IF none of the words above combine with the rest of the letters to
make any sense...then this riddle must be a made up word, which would
be very tricky to solve.
OOOPS scratch Udun...it was late when I was looking at U's.

Also add to the list of possible words with U and O letters
properly
accented:
Adunakhor
Lorindol
Tur
