New "Power" No-Drop GB

Fellow MEPBM’rs,

GB70 is history now. It was a no-drop GB and there were, surprise… NO DROPS!

It’s time to put together the sequel. Clint says that we’re about half full.

So, if you wake up in the morning, look in the mirror, and the first thought that pops into your head is “WOOHOO I get my MEPBM turns back today! Dang I’m a Handsome and Magnificently Awesome MEPBM Player!”, then this game is for you (even when the turn results don’t quite bear out the magnificently awesome part… ) Heck, you could even leave out the handsome part and it’d still be for you!

So send in your nation preferences to Clint. But remember, it’s NO DROP.
It does have a voting provision for ending the game, so there’s no bug-hunt.
The last two in this series both had the losing side vote to end the game at just about the right time (i.e. it was obvious the game was won by one side or the other). It’s darn near the perfect MEPBM format for old-timer / veteran players:
[ul]
[li]no pesky email floods
[/li][li]opportunity to experiment with game mechanics
[/li][li]opportunity to experiment with grand strategy
[/li][li]opportunity to experiment with interesting tactics
[/li][li]one diplo to your team every 5 turns (T6, T11, T16…)
[/li][/ul]

Clint, maybe you could list the list of rules for the 70 Sequel here on this thread?

John Folz and I are teaming up again for this one. We really look forward to it.

Dave

I agree with you, Dave. GunBoat is definitely the closest thing to the games of the past. I’m in my second GB now and having a blast in both.

Dave , ya sold me and am dying to try Gunboat style game out – think it might be my favorite games if anything like 75 , I have already written Clint to pick up a spot on game 70 rematch – so if game is only half full he might be counting me then !! can’t wait !!

Mike

Where can I find the latest pairings?

Can’t see them in Front Sheet or Gunboat pairings (unless I missed them).

Michael

Here you go. You are allowed a 30 word diplo to your team on turns 6/11/16 etc.

Clint (GM)

Okay there’s been no call for the Power element of this game at present. I do have another player looking to join who dropped a no-drop in the past. It was never my intention that the ban be permanent and he has given his assurance that he will play until the end. With that in mind any objections to him joining?

For further reference he hadn’t understood that full implications of the no-drop rule before, but does now…

Clint (GM)

I’m not planning on joining this next no-drop GB, so this is just general commentary not an objection for this specific game. But if it were up to me, I wouldn’t want the player who previously dropped a GB that that was billed as “no drop” back in a game I was playing. No drop rules are clear enough, I can’t fathom how he couldn’t understand the full implications? Even if he had a legitimate real-world excuse for not being able to play on (and I can think of many), couldn’t he have found someone to take up his positions and not be considered a dropper?

I think POWER only meant that it is targeted for very experienced players, not the play when all turns are submitted type POWER.

Well, hmmm. a No-Drop dropper wants to join the No-Drop GB… hmmm

We have the voting rules, so the game does end when it should. And all of us have real lives that present logistical difficulties from time to time. But signing up for a no-drop game implies that one is willing to do whatever it takes to overcome our real life logistics issues. It’s a commitment to the other 11 players to not mess up their game by quitting. I think that is very important. Clint, only you and the player know the real circumstances of his prior drop. If it was some amazing real life circumstance, then I’m ok with giving him another chance. If his excuse is a lame one, I am not ok with it. Your call Clint (in my opinion)

However, if he drops this one then I think it’s very clear that he should never be allowed into another no-drop game, EVER. PERIOD. NO MATTER WHAT.

Dave

I would prefer the game to get started and we play the game so I would vote to allow just about anyone that has experience to play.

I also enjoy reading post game comments so if the player is willing to keep a minimal journal of his game then it would be even better.

Of course Tony doesn’t keep of journal of the game, so obviously not a requirement.

tim

Sounds as if he explained himself to you and his excuse was good enough for you – so is good enough for me – but please do keep an eye and make sure that no one drops as this will change the game very much with all of us going into a no drop Gunboat and someone does decide to drop !!

Mike

I agree with everything Dave has stated above !!

Mike

You can always drop any game if you are experienced enough and know how to do it… banckruptcy… obviously, it can be done unintentionally too, which is really embarrasing, and it can be done by the enemy.

BTW… It’s not me that Clint is refering to

I think POWER only meant that it is targeted for very experienced players, not the play when all turns are submitted type POWER.

PoWeR (Process When Ready) is just that, when all turns are in then the game gets processed. Experienced players only is something different and I vet players on the whole for their own fun and that of others. I don’t preclude them joining a game but do encourage them to join more suitable games. Where it’s a pre-requisite then that’s something different of course.

Okay I intend to give the player a second chance here.

Obviously a player can deliberately blow up his nation(s) but there’s always other options;

  1. drop and tell us so that we can get a replacement player or he find a replacement player himself
  2. in unusual circumstances contact us so that he doesn’t get blacklisted.
  3. if commitment might be a problem don’t play no-drop games which demand more commitment from the player concerned…

Clint

I am good to go with Clint’s decision.

Please don’t bankrupt your position to eliminate your position. Try and pass the position on to someone else first.

tim

If Clint is convinced to give the player a second chance that is good enough for me.

If anyone that has made the commitment for one reason or another needs to bail out, I would sincerely hope he posts it on the forum so a replacement can be found (obviously not mentioning the position he plays) rather than potentially ruining the game for everyone by choosing voluntary bankruptcy.

Cheers,
Alain

Hey Dave how you doing? Long time since we whipped those guys in that one game. Dont remember much about it except alot of sporking. Still love that word

Can i ask what your comment about teaming up meant? Hadnt come across that in gunboat (& given the nature of gunboat, seems a bit confusing)

CHeers
Mike

Dave is playing gunboat with a partner John Foltz. Basically Dave get’s one nation and John gets the other. It is still gunboat, it just gives you the ability to play the game with another person so you can talk about the game with your playing partner. All the other gunboat rules still apply.

tim

Hi Mike,
yes, Tim has it right. John Folz and I can plan things together for our two nations (as if we were one person talking to ourself), but we can’t talk to anyone else. There are several 2-person GB teams these days. Bernd & Marty, Tim & Tony, etc.

John and I split up for GB 70 (i.e. we each played two nations, and as we found out at the end of the game - one of us was DS and the other FP), but we’re hoping to team up again.

Dave

The good news is Dave and I are kind of opposites so it helps to keep us both in line. He is more aggressive and I am more calculated. Helps in the balance.

John
