Why oh why do you want a vote for best individual player? It's a TEAM game. The ONLY thing that matters is the TEAM win not any individual's ego trip.
Others would, and have, asked "Why oh why any system at all?" No ranking system can come close to measureing how good a player anyone is, and thus the whole thing should be tossed in the can. I do think the "vote" system does represent the best gauge of who was the best player on any given team, and it certainly is likely to reward those that play with and help along, newer players.
Even with 7-8 years experience, I'll never get a vote when playing with the likes of Marc P, Mark J, or Tony Z.
I do agree that the system seems to be going in the wrong direction. More rankings instead of less. I guess there will be something for everyone. Sure I lose all my games, but my teammates like me. I win all my games, but just don't play enough to get a huge number for the [whatever that ranking is where you get points for wins - losses] ranking. I spend the most, so look at my [whatever that ranking is that is like XP.... turns played * team strength].
Of course, the flip side will be that no matter how well you do in one area, people will be pointing out your flaws in other areas.
I think the ranking system idea needs to go in the trash with the "charge more for the same service, or charge the same for less service", "The rate hike has nothing to do with encouraging people to use AutoMagic" lies, and the "must put real name on post for it to be considered valid" crud.
