RD: have you tried reading any of Tolkien's books? The clues - to quote an
absolutely awful UK daytime TV quiz show - are there.
This doesn't always work, wise advice though it is. I'd also
advise reading the ICE roleplaying modules, since this is
what the game designers used for riddles and names - not the
books!
Maybe the answer is ol' Muzzie's original name.
Warmer, much warmer
Try "Er-Murazor", it was old Muzzies Numenorean
birth name (he was the second son of King Tar-Ciryatan) and
the younger brother opf Tar-Atanamir the Great. Er Murazor
means Black Prince.
Colin.
I'm going to have to agree with Richard that all lines fit Sauron
(He was a leader/Lord, the elves sang of him, he caused a bit of
discord. His essence remained through the end of the third age
because of the One Ring forcing the Fellowship to destroy it rather
than bending it to their will. Destroying the ring essentially
destroyed Sauron or left him merely another malignant spirit you don't
want to meet in the dark.).
聽聽聽聽I'm also going to have to deny that Richard's answer is right.
Sauron was never as weak as a witch or as petty a ruler as a King (I
think he advised the Numorean rulers IIRC?). The answer should be an
Elven (singing, remember?) name for him while he was king of the
Numoreans (before or during his corruption since riddle talks about
his future sowing of discord).

RD: Sauron was not always all-powerful - he started out as Morgoth's deputy.
Looking for other names for Sauron I find:
Thauron (the earlier, Quenya, form of Sauron).
Gorthaur the Cruel - his Sindarin name, so if elves sang about him, that
would be the name they used.
Annatar, Lord of Gifts. The name Sauron took when he assumed a fair-seeming
form to gain the confidence of the Gwaith-i-Mirdain (elf-smiths) of Eregion
in the Second Age, and helped them create the Rings of Power, of which the
One Ring, made by Sauron alone, was the master. If the elves sang about him
at all, it's most likely they sang about him as Annatar when they thought
him a friend. After all, you don't make songs about your enemies, do you?
Richard.
