New Spells

Been a happy player of this game for fourteen years. I still run into
dark corners that I know nothing about. In my last two games there were
dragon events that neither I nor the other experienced players had ever
seen before. We never would have predicted what happened.

This game is unmatched in subtleness, complexity and mystery. That is
why it has survived almost twenty years. That is why I get nervous at
proposals to change it FURTHER.

Persons who get bored easily and need constant stimulation are anxious to
flit from one new event to another. They are not anxious to explore the
innermost layers of the onion. They don;t even realize the onion has
lower levels.

Over the centuries art historians and critics have come to a consensus
that Rubens was one of the greatest artists the race has produced.
Unlikely as it seems today, several of his paintings have been painted
over, by well meaning 'artists', to some degree or other. In at least
one case the overpainter was 'correcting' a mythical allusion. In
another case the overpainter was 'improving' perspective. Needless to
say these overpainters are now considered to be self-absorbed vandals.
At this very moment art restorers are painstakingly removing overpainted
paint chips, one by one, after years of study.

Gentlemen, before you substitute your judgemnt for "Rubens', I beg you to
consider all the consequences.

RD: I don't question the brilliance of Rubens, Feild or Stassun. As long as
there are players prepared to support the original game, it will survive.
However I do not see why, alongside the original game, a different version
with, for example, different spells could not run. Nobody is suggesting
consigning the original design to the dustbin. ME started off as an 'open'
game, then along came grudge games in which Easterlings were removed. Was
that a bad thing? Both types of game run happily side by side to the good
of both.

Then along came 2950, and after that Gunboat, and my WotR scenario, not to
mention BofA, all running happily alongside 1650 open and grudge games.
What is the problem with another variant with different spells? I think
that the more viable variants there are, the more likely MEPBM is to broaden
its player base for the good of all, and the more likely original 1650 is to
prosper.

Richard.
