Newbies????????

At one time, all of us were newbies, yes??? There are some nations that I haven't played yet, and I've been playing for umpteen years, some nations I suck at, some I do pretty damn good. If I were a newbie, and read all this c_ _ p , I wouldn't even bother wasting my money playing this game. It's a team effort, in most games!!! As for you "oldies", deflate your heads a little and help the "newbies" out. Suggestion to Clint; suggest to all "first timers" to play BOFA, simple.

i agree
even if i started my first game and was undecided about continuing playing,

Agreed this thread is certainly not the greatest PR...
Mind you, one must realize that most of the people who
keep up with this mepbmlist are not the communication
problems we're griping about... For the "newbies" on
the list, Congratulations! You're already miles ahead
of many who experiment with our obsession! Please
understand we're simply a bunch of folks airing our
opinions in a free and comfortable environment. I'm
quite confident that many who opine that first time
players "should this" or "shouldn't that" while the
company "should/shouldn't" similar thoughts are yet
still welcoming and encouraging folk. We all have ideas
on what would make the world better, but are still
just regular people in our daily Middle Earth lives...
Please don't rush to harsh judgement, especially based
on such imperfect media as email!

Another message mentions the company's willingness to
answer questions, dedicated game GM, etc. Not sure if
this is something that has been fiddled with in the
past, but why not seek for volunteers in order to include
a dedicated Mentor list with initial first timer info?
Experienced players who are reliable and willing to
answer questions. I'd be more than happy to volunteer,
and more than happy to answer any questions posed by
first timers seeking advice/opinions.

I don't understand why experienced players cannot both help new players out, and prefer that they take easier nations.

I think I said this before in this thread, but whenever I play a new game, I intentionally do not take the powerful position on the team. That way, I can watch everyone else and learn, while not being able to hurt my side too much.

Some people seem to be thinking that these restrictions apply for the first 10 games or a year or something. That's not at all what I have in mind. I'm simply thinking that for the first 2-3 games, people should try to play on their level. That's precisely how I approached the game when I started, and I think it's best for everyone involved.

Jason:

I agree. A newbie would be wise to play a position which will not
get clobbered from day one (i.e., North Gondor) However, if a newbie
wants to play a position that gets clobbered from day one - well
let 'em. That is their choice not anyone elses.

I think encouraging a newbie to try certain positions is a good
idea. Forcing a newbie to play one is another matter.

I think this is where we disagree. I don't see it as their choice alone. When you're on a team of 10 players, you have a responsibility to everyone, on your team and the other team, to be able to live up (and play up) to the position you've taken.

If a game ends in 8 turns because of the NG player's poor tactical understanding, I'm not very happy, regardless of which team I play for.

Jason:

How do you rectify this issue? As a newbie, I sign up for NG, Noldo,
etc. Does the team have any say as to which nation I should or
should not play? Presently, no. I trust Clint (and I do) is filling
the games as best he can with the requests he has received - wait
lists and all.

As players do we decide or have some say which nations a newbie may
play? No. If I were signing up - see Weenie's post - for a game
having never played before, and was suddenly told you can't play NG
because you will get clobbered and likely get knocked out around turn
8. I would say okay, bring it on. I will show you. However, some
other poor soul may say - screw it - I am out of here.

Who would want to offer their services? In Legends this occurs, some players give up their free time to offer advice and help to new players to the game. For free I might add.

I have a great deal of faith in Clint, no question.

You must have been the kind of child who did exactly what your parents told you to avoid.

A team player is someone who can recognize his limitations, take advice from others, and play within himself. Someone who insists on taking a position his first time out "or else" doesn't seem likely to possess those traits.

Okay, I think we all agree Clint and company are doing their best to
promote the game and keep us entertained. Clint for PM!

You must have been the kind of child who did exactly what your

parents

Interestingly enough, just the opposite. I avoided nearly everything
my parents warned me about (I wish they had told me about MEPBM -
must have more... how addictive)!

advice

Subtle implication is that a newbie may not be a team player. Is a
newbie who signs up for Noldo the first time not recognizing their
limtations (i.e., not a team player)? I rather see it a confident
player who is up to a challenge. If a newbie believes they can play
Noldo or North Gondor, why should you or anyone else deny the
pleasure? (okay no hedonistic ideas here)

All of us, more than others, have experienced the pig headed player
or multiple position drops by team members. But I think we expect
that will occur whether it is a newbie playing one nation or
another. I guess I want everyone to remember that it is a game for
heaven's sake. Let the dice roll and do the best you can with what
you get.

Chris

P.S. I've enjoyed the chat gentlemen... Jason, I think we both want
to see the game improve, we just may have different ideas on how when
it comes to new players. Gotta go for now.

Such misinterpretation, whether willfully done or mistakenly,
does not add to the conversation. Jason makes a general point
regarding human behavoir, based on his experience in the world
and the game. Suddenly he's accused of labelling each and
every newbie? That's a stretch.

Let's be reasonable. We're simply having a "What if I won
the Lottery" discussion. Newbies end up playing all nations
now - there does not seem to be any plan to change the way
games are set up, so there is no issue - repeat, hypothetical
discussion. Send in your list of nations, and there's a
good chance you'll get one near the top. Nothing sinister..

As I said before: when you find yourself on the same team as
one of those experienced players who posted here wishing there
WERE restrictions on newbie nations, I guarantee you he'll be
one of your best sources of advice/knowledge/encouragement.

Enjoy your Games!

Most players - if I have the time to talk them through it would be happy to change nations I have found.
