By African, European, Asian and Latin American standards one civil
war in
225 years is a rock of stability. The US was not 'unable" to pay
its UN
dues but chose not to do so as a political tactic. When the UN
removed a
certain African administrator and changed certain policies the dues
were
paid. Point made--thank you Newtie.
Trouble is, if every country decided to hold the UN and, by
implication its agencies, hostage to domestic politics, a lot more
people in this world would be in dire straits than already are. Having
friends working "on the front lines" for the UNHCR, I could probably
provide you with a lot of details of programmes that were on hold
because of Sen Helms and company. The US was right in its aims, just
very wrong in the method of getting something done about it.
