Off-topic: How tall is Gandalf?

How tall is Gandalf? I was surprised to
learn that in the LOTR movie Gandalf
is 8 feet tall -- and they say that is
what he is in the books.

I never pictured him that way myself.
Maybe he is always stooping over a bit
so that once in a while he stands straight
and shows his majesty. But I never thought
of him as taller than men, particularly
Aragorn.

We know that he can fit into Bag End, at least & there is no suggestion that he is too cramped. That suggests quite a bit less that six feet tall. Either that or hobbits go in for very high ceilinged rooms.

Maybe he can change his height to suit the needs of the moment.

It clearly relates in the books that Gandalf is taller than any of
the Dunedain in fellowship or the men. The book averages man heights
to be of 6'to 6'6" and Dunedain to be 7' to somewhere around 7'5"
therefore it reasonable to assume Gandalf is roughly 8'. And it
never mentions in any of the books that hobbits built small homes in
fact in the last book many of the houses that were available were
used to house Sharkey's men. Therefore it is appropriate to assume
that Hobbit homes are quite comfortable in size for men. Lastly
these people did not have central AC and I don't know how many of
you'll are from the SOUTH (of the Mason Dixon) but houses were built
with extremely large ceilings to allow for hot air to rise within the
room to keep the hot air rising and the cooler air closer to the
floor. Which would explain Gandalf's capability of fitting into the
home, although they never say how comfortably. He could have been
stooping, which is more than likely the case.

It's been a while since I last read the LotR, but I remember that
when Gandalf needed he could look very tall and fearsome indeed to
his enemies. I think he uses his magic to if not change his shape in
Middle-Earth, at least change his appearance to others. When he's
dealing with hobbits he's just a bent old wizard, while when angry he
can grow into the mighty Istari he truly is, or has the need to look
like.

Hmm, if Gandalf is 8ft tall then Aragorn must be even taller. JRRT
specifically states that Aragorn is the tallest of the fellowship.

Over at the White Council board (http://www.xenite.org), Aragorns
height was hotly debated. They couldn't determine the exact height
but JRRT did say the adverage height of a Numerean was 6'4" and
Aragorn was taller than that. I can't see him being over 8' tall
however.
