How tall is Gandalf? I was surprised to
learn that in the LOTR movie Gandalf
is 8 feet tall -- and they say that is
what he is in the books.
I never pictured him that way myself.
Maybe he is always stooping over a bit
so that once in a while he stands straight
and shows his majesty. But I never thought
of him as taller than men, particularly
Aragorn.

RD: I would like to see the quote from JRR Tolkien which says Gandalf is 8
feet tall. Or the quote that says Gandalf is taller than Dunedain. I
thought I'd read Tolkien as thoroughly as anybody but I don't recall either
of these.
I do recall Tolkien writing that Saruman could assume various disguises. I
take that to include height. If Saruman could alter his height at will,
surely Gandalf could?
Most of the time Gandalf prferred to remain relatively inconspicuous and
work by stealth, but he could assume a powerful majestic form at will, like
when he confronted the Balrog and later the Witch-king. That is NOT to say
Gandalf wandered around 8 feet tall all the time!
Regards,
Richard.
