What of the ancient Chinese - the inventors of the wheel, writing, taxation (okay bad example maybe) and much more;
the ancient Egyptians - builders of the pyramids, created auditing would you believe;
Greece - ancient Greeks created the first democracy; expanded our understanding of mathematics and physics to hitherto unknown levels; their ideas in metaphysics are still being explored by modern day philosophers. The Byzantine Empire was the worlds first Christian empire, survived for 1,000 years and transmitted from ancient times to modern times much of Greek and Roman learning.
Britain - responsible for the industrial revolution and the modern era.
And there are many other examples that could be given.
