I was probably one of the instigators of Clint's problem. I am trying
to sign up five people for one game. Three reasonably experienced
players, one player who has two games under his belt both as Long
Rider and he wanted to repeat play (it's also a bloody good fun
nation to play) and another player who hasn't played for some years
and even then played only three or four games. We wanted a "safe"
position for him and asked for the BS. These two Clint could
accommodate but the selection of nations left to the three
experienced players was an awkward collection so we declined.
The rest of the ds signed up for game #9 included several players who
evidently had said I'm playing that postion or not at all. We've now
given Clint our selection but also said we'd be happy to change them
if someone desperately wanted one of the positions, and it's not the
case that we've asked for the plum nations, our collection includes
two ds positions that aren't on the hot list, in fact one of our
number thinks we've selected two postions notoriously hard to fill.
But as we have five nations to call upon we feel easier in taking the
riskier ones.
When I sign up to play a new game after deciding which allegiance I
generally simply give Clint a list of nations I wont play and then
wait to be surprised. In two recent games I was lucky to pick up the
Dog Lord in #78 and Long Rider in #79 simply by telling Clint I'd
rather not play the Fire King as it bores me rigid, I'd just recently
finished a couple of games playing Witch-king and BS so I'd rather
not repeat either of those but other than that I'd play any position.
