One Ring game ends

In one of my (many) recent e-mails I mooted the idea of scrapping the
One Ring as a means of ending 1650 scenarios. This is one of my
(many) pet hates which, in my opinion, disfigures the game. Anyone
out there got any rational justification for keeping it or is there
any support for scrapping it?

It adds some color, but it is so difficult to do that I think it
ends up subtracting rather than adding to the game. It is also
unlikely that a very weak team can succeed with it - the
other side will know it is coming and can be waiting at Barad-dur
with a nasty welcoming committee. I've been on three teams now
that stumbled across the ring while behind, tried, and got nowhere;
one more where the other side found it early but apparently dropped it
and never was able to get it again. Now - if it was made easier to
get once it was dropped - that might make the idea interesting;
I just dislike the idea that you get it once, drop it instantly,
and can never find the blasted thing again.

These topics just keep coming round and round and round and round....
