Online turn submission

Clint,

What is the progress on creating an on-line turn submission form?
With LoR this winter, you should be getting ready to ramp up the
numbers of games running. The easiest way is to put in some work at
the front end and automate the submission of turns. This on-line
submission would also allow 1) proper fields are entered for the
proper commands and 2) proper spelling, etc would be automated also.
The friends that I drug into the game over the past two years all
complained about the inflexibility of the order entry and the lack of
a built in check for accuracy.

Calvin

Here! here!

Actually, there is work afoot on an XML based map -
presumably this structure can be used to store orders
etc and from this database you can do accuracy checks.

If there are mepbmers out there doing this sort of
work, then I am sure that Harly/GSI? have plans
aswell.

A friend and I started work on something like this,
but it sort of ground to a halt. I think there is now
a race on and the game's afoot (as opposed to a
knee)....my head hurts

We're working on it...

4 Stage program
1)i) Order input
1)ii) Order checker
2) Middle Earth Front End - nice graphics - auto-input.
3) Export capability to share turn and information with team-mates, lots of
other bits and pieces..
4) Other stuff - for later....

Money is a bit of a problem to finance a programmer but I think we have that
sorted now. We want it to tie in with our (to come) Accounts program so
that they are one file, in colour that sort of thing.

We asked GSI to support it and they gave us (mostly) permission to go ahead
with it all. Note we're very much aware of the deadline - we're crawling as
fast as we can.

This needs to work with what we have got really if you want us to support
it. That is limited by the ME program and what GSI will allow us to
modify - if Jeremy wants to chat to me directly then we can discuss this.

Hi Clint,

If I might make a suggestion... when (and IF) you guys get around to
coding a new front end program, please have your programmer do it in C/
C++ or something of equivalence. That way, it wouldn't be terribly
difficult to do a port for the Apple users out there. 'Cause, sadly, I
know you guys will never think about doing the program with us in the
back of your mind.

At present we are doing it in Delphi - sort of better version of Pascal.
We're not going to be able to get everyone sorted I am afraid - work has
started a fair while ago on this.

But will you release the file structures for both submissions and results so
that someone else might write a functionally equivalent C/C++/Java port of
the software. Some of us who play are fairly experienced developers and I'd
be happy to do a Java version using JDK 1.1.8 (available on more platforms
than 1.2.x and 1.3.x) as time (and my paying clients) permit once I know the
structures of the files.

we have had for freebis before is that they invariably end up failing when
we come to the crunch... (no offence intended).

I wasn't offering to do your stuff for you. I was wanting to do the Java
version for me and anyone else who might not work purely on PCs. I use a
Linux box quite a bit and having the Java version would let me work from my
Linux box without booting it to Windows NT/2000.

No offense was taken. If I were to do the version you plan on doing for
yourself, it wouldn't be for free. After all, I'm a software developer. I
make a living doing this stuff and I don't just give away my time. I do,
however, make "tools" and "utilities" that I create for myself available to
the public as freeware (or shareware if it was done on company time).

Note taken we'll see what we can do should development allow.

Well Clint,

That's okay. Despite the fact that one could code in Java, or C, or
C++, Pascal, (perhaps even Perl) and have 100% universal abilty to code
into any platform... you guys chose Delphi with it's proprietary Pascal?

I did some work in Delphi a few years back. I certainly liked it...
made ugly front end GUIs though...

*Sigh* I guess if my platform is to be forgotten then there lies the
end of my MEPBM experience.

(pulling out his voodoo doll with someone's striking resemblance)

At present we are doing it in Delphi - sort of better version of Pascal.

Morph

With the ending of 2950 g28 (the ds conceded on t21
after the last neutral turned free), I would like to
thank the following

a) the free side (especially those who were playing
their first middle earth game, and those who helped
them out).
b) the DS side (the rangers were laughing when we
threatened away Mt Gram, but Mordor was tough). For
10,000 timber a pop, you would think the bridge would
have eventually stayed up.
c) Yahoo (they helped up swap turnsheets and emails).

Noldor/South Gondor/Khand were the top three. But we
didn't lose a single free, so that's pretty good.

thanks
din

p.s. I really think leaving Mt Gram alone was a bad idea.

p.s. I really think leaving Mt Gram alone was a bad idea.

The DS side experienced a number of problems throughout the game.
Most of which I don't want to discuss in public.
Suffice to mention that towards the end only three of the original DS
players where still fighting.

However, I too enjoyed the fight throughout the game so I would like
to reciprocate your thanks.
