If I may make a few observations, they were Hurons and not Ents at the
battle of Hornburg
and the rangers arrived after the battle.

RD: No Tim, wrong book - Hurons were injuns (oops I mean native Americans!). The walking forest which killed all the fleeing orcs comprised both ents and huorns.

What about the fact tha Merry could not possibly know of the
destruction of the forest in Isengard, and thus "trick" Ents into
going to war?! What an nice assumption for the hobbit who never been
out of the Shire before!

Except it was mentioned by Gandalf at the Council of Elrond which
Merry and Pippin listened in on.
So they did know about Saruman turning Isengard from a lovely
forestry place to a cesspool of fire and pits.

*** Also hadn't they met up with Gandalf (aka Saruman) earlier on when entering the forest?

Clint (reader of books)
Yes Gandalf when they meet him in the forest confirmed that the White
Robed Wizard they saw earlier was most likely Sarumon. In the book that
is.
