I am playing with palantirs for the first time in quite a while. The order desciption for scry art is MISC, but the order description’s text indicates success is based on mage rank. Can anyone give me guidance on what charcter class can or cannot use the artifact?
One man’s experience: My mages are to busy with other things to waste time with a palantir. My agents and emissaries use them and get the seven hex map. Sometimes other data as a bonus. When palantiring a capital they almost always get a full report.
I think you can get more detailed info if you use a character with Mage rank, but I’ve used Palantirs with Emissaries and Commanders, so I assume anyone can use them.
I have used a Palantir with a 50 rank pure commander 4 times and with a pure mage of 60 rank 3 times.
Out of 4 commander scrys he did not identify (commander name and size missing) 2 armies one hex away from the scry center and successfully identified 4 armies.
The mage seems to have identified all 3 armies so far, though with such a small sample it may be difficult to determine for sure whether there is a big advantage to mages using these trinkets, other characters can certainly weild them though.
Yes, you get more infor if you use a Mage. Which really sucks as NG because you dont have a one. The comms can still use 'em. It will let you see if there is an icon there, sometimes it will give you info, but much better placed in the hands of a mage (especially a high ranked one)
Use them in the early game to find the WK cav up north, map out Angmar, check to see where the Blind Sorceror is going, if the Cloud is going South or to the Ithil, etc. Icon’s relative to known starting forces is good enough.
By the late-Early game towards mid and beyond, you want to get them into mage’s hands to seek more detailed information as you move into a more focused character game. Those starting 30 mages (Findy, Baranor, etc) are excellent for this as they can simply scry and train every turn. Good, consistent information and one day a curser.
