PDF fonts

PDF is designed so that a document will look the same on
every computer.
The PDF is generated with messy fonts, so everyone's turn

looks the

same: annoying.

Not necessarily. It all depends on how the PDF was created. If
it uses fonts that aren't the standard 13 and it doesn't embed
the missing font information, then font substitution takes place
on the reader's computer.

I'm making sure it's not purely a Mac problem.

I have created more than a few PDF files for clients, so I like
to think I know what I'm talking about. Especially after that time
I sent a brochure out without embedded fonts...

I've actually created PDF as well, and you are correct about embedding vs non-embedding. It's been a problem on every computer I've viewed it on, so no telling what font they're using.

How exactly are the PDFs generated?

If I recall, the pdfs that GSI generated looked great because they
were generated using a Macintosh. For instance, on the cover page,
the title line, "Middle-earth Play-By-Mail", has a quote mark
after "Mail". That's actually supposed to be a superscript "tm" for
trademark. It all started when the company switched from using Macs
to PCs to generate the pdfs. I'm assuming that's because they
switched to using generic fonts?

Cheers,
Eric

Probably. I've seen the GSI-printed turns (mailed in the US), and they have a very nice "medieval" font for the cover page. If we could figure out what font that is (by asking GSI?) we'd solve most of this problem.

For that matter, if we could just get a list of what fonts the generator wants, we could get our hands on them.
