Player types

Hi,

The reason why there are so distinct opinions about ME, is primary because
there basicly are four types of players, which can combine into two groups:

1. TIME
a) Those who have LOTS of time (usually because they have minimal
commitments to other aspects of life). These players like Grudge games,
where the whole team gather over a weekend and discuss plans and exchange
info, and also spend a lot of time teasing the enemy in various forums

b) Those who have a limited amount of time (usually because they are tied up
with family, children, work, sports....ect.). These types like the Gunboat
scenario, because this is the least time consuming way of playing ME.

2. STYLE
c) Those who like well defined games where all rules and aspects are known.
This is the typically strategy player, that like to outguess the opponent
and think out briliant plans. These types like games like Chess, Risk and
Diplomacy.

d) Those who like poor defined games, where you have to learn rules and
aspects along the way. This is the typically explore player, where great joy
are combined with exploring new features and new ways of playing a game.
These types like games like Diablo.

Time and style can be mixed and can of course change over time, at the
moment I'm most 1b/2c. The great thing about Middle earth PBM, is that it
can be played with focus on each of the four types for the individual
player. The important thing is to respect all four types of players and
their individual needs, and not make general changes to the game which
removes focus on distinct player types.

We've recently had a few "rough spots" in our grudge
team. I asked what was up, and one of the players had
an interesting thought.

For some players, the game becomes about ruthless
efficiency in striving for the win. There is little
room to try new things, or even run your own nation
because the team is always in each others business
making sure everyone is being equally ruthlessly
efficient.

Hey, if you're looking for wins, it works. We've not
just won our last 4 games, but truely dominated.
We're DS in WotR in our current game. BY GT10 we
owned all of Rhun and the Iron hills, had destroyed
most of NG's less fortified pops, and were well on the
way to turning Southern Gondor into a smouldering
ruin.

GT19 just ran. All the non-hidden pops around
Mirkwood, including both Woodmen MTs and the Dwarven
pops in the Grey Mountains are ours, as is Imladris.
Southern Gondor is truely a wasteland, NG is reduced
to cowering inside the walls of Pelargir and Minas
Tirith.

The only things slowing us down are a large number of
failures with Reveal Pop and inability to get new
recruiting sites close to the front as the "front"
rolls quickly across the map.

And we acheive this rapid advance simply through
ruthless efficiency. This means everyone scrutinizing
every aspect of everyone's turn... Why is your tax
rate so low? Why is that emi doing ImprPops instead
of InfOthrs? Why did you recruit there instead of
here? "10K for a C/A instead of 5K for a C? Are you
crazy?!?"

Teams that consist of players that completely give up
control of their nation to the collective, do better
in the win/loss column. But, that may not be as much
fun for some.

1a - those with time. Nice you can afford to fly all over to
Australia, New Zealand, various states and provinced in North
American, and/or various European countries in order to "gather"
every fortnight or so. Can I be on your team?

Another type of category would be the listening/speaking type.

1) The Megaphone - those who are always right and demand
others "respect", essentially, by doing as they're "advised". These
listen only so much as to find a tricky way to "prove" themselves
right by disproving what's written "against" them. When confronted
with irrefutable logic, they get irrational and snotty.

2) The Sheep - those who take the moral high road that they always
listen to everyone and try to do everything for everyone. When
confronted with a decision, they follow the Megaphone and/or make the
silliest mistakes, blaming the "teams lack of coordination" for their
inability to move in the right direction (or any, for that matter).

3) The Lone Ranger - those who simply don't read/listen at all. They
must think they know everything already. Send reports at least once
a turn to relay their pdf/plans, no questions asked or answered, no
door left open (or answer any knocks) to coordinated activities
beyond what they're already doing. No matter what happens, the
friendly ones are always "That was a great game folks, hope to see
you again." or the completely antisocial ones just disappear..Poof!

4) The Megaphone Ranger goes Baaaaah! - Loud critic of just about
everything, knows everything and demands everyone else understands
that but refuses to lead. Yells "We have to do [this] so get it
together!!" every turn but doesn't get it together him/herself only
to do something stupidly selfish and, of course, blame everyone else
for not "getting it together".
