process on demand game

The problem is that DS would want more non-winter
turns than winter turns, so FP would wait the full two
weeks to get their orders in.. In the winter, it
would be the DS waiting the full two weeks to submit
turns.

Game gets processed two weeks after the
previous
process, but earlier if all orders are in. Go on,
think outside the box,
  and give it a go.

So little faith in the players?

You may be right. What happens in the 1 week games? - Are there twice as
many winter turns as usual? Is the program still linked to the real world
calendar?

Could it be detached from the real world calendar, so that there are 6 (or
12 or whatever) winter turns, then 6 spring turns etc., irrespective of
processing dates?

That is about the most assanine statement I have ever heard. Anytime you want to play the dark servants Jason and it is always winter, let me know. Since you are a good player, I am sure you will overcome any shortfalls.

The problem is that DS would want more non-winter

would be the DS waiting the full two weeks to submit

RD: Also, what happens when a player, having sent in his orders early, is
asked to make a change by his team-mates to fit team plans, but because all
orders have all arrived early, the game gets processed and the desired
change does not?

You could just say, 'tough luck pal,' but if you don't process a change
which the majority of the team wanted, you may find that team quitting or
enough of them to wreck the game.

Richard.

That would be the price to pay for a game which eliminates some of the
boring waiting. It's not an unreasonable price - any individual player
could delay the process, up to the limit of 2 weeks, by holding on to his
own orders. So if for example you are trying to persuade a team mate to
change an order, you'd not send in your own orders until you'd persuaded
him, given up, or got too close to the deadline. A good team should be
able to co-ordinate well enough to circulate draft orders, with proposed
submission dates, then submit them if there have been no objections or
corrections raised.

Certainly there's a slightly increased chance of errors. But it's much the
same if you move from an unlimited chess game, to the use of a chess clock,
errors increase. But chess clocks were invented due to the fact that many
players get more entertainment from a more zippy game. In a process on
demand game, you'd get your 2 weeks whenever you needed or wanted them, but
if everyone was happy to proceed - especially in those first 6 or so turns
when you have 12 characters and many standard moves - then they'd be
playing instead of twiddling thumbs.

I acknowledge the seasonal problem, but that's a programming issue, which
should IMO, be corrected.

All you have to do to trial it by starting with a Gunboat game, then
you don't have the issue of teammates wanting their orders
reviewed/changed. I think it would be interesting, but still more
difficult for some nations due to the weather factors affecting
certain areas more than others for longer periods of time.

The rules of the scenario are "process when all turns are in", and you would
agree to this when you sign up for that game. Therefore, you would have to
be even more careful and coordinated... In your example, it is clear that
the *whole* team has submitted orders before its plans were firmed up,
otherwise the turn could not have been run, could it!

And quitting a game in a huff because the pre-agreed rules were applied
would be a bit, well, petty.

You could just say, 'tough luck pal,' but if you don't process a change
which the majority of the team wanted, you may find that team quitting or
enough of them to wreck the game.

That would have to be agreed. I think as long as you are aware of the rules then you'd be okay. You could have a delay of 1 day say (or a warning if all except 2 players have their turns in so that you have a little time to modify things.) Then it would be scenario b) described below.

able to co-ordinate well enough to circulate draft orders, with proposed

corrections raised.

You could have a rule about delays or something like if there are only 2 players left to put orders in then you have 48 hours to get your turns in? Being aware of the pressures of real life this would give some time to get orders in yet also keep the flow of the game going.

Certainly there's a slightly increased chance of errors. But it's much the
same if you move from an unlimited chess game, to the use of a chess clock,
errors increase. But chess clocks were invented due to the fact that many
players get more entertainment from a more zippy game. In a process on

Like FTF games - more errors the faster you play upto a certain level where more time doesn't improve your play but can actually worsen it as co-ordination falls apart etc.

I acknowledge the seasonal problem, but that's a programming issue, which
should IMO, be corrected.

You could have the game move on 2weeks each time that would avoid the problem. Deadlines would be within 2 wks of the last time and we'd have to check at our end (some admin but usually okay - in the FTF games we do this for example).
