We’re looking for a Programmer to help complete our conversion of the Mac
program to PC. We’ve done the Initialise (ie set-up new games), Process is
halfway done (4wks eta roughly) and that leaves around 80-100 hours work on the Print routine. Anyone interested in this get in touch…
At some point I’m sure we’d all like a refresh on how you make sure that all volunteers - and come to think of it GMs - have a level playing field when it comes to understanding the darker secrets of the game
Clint: Just what do you mean you will chat with the volunteer? Ask him not to reveal what he discovers? Or, maybe, only plays if he is part of the GM team? I’m uncertain just what you mean.
Basically we’re not looking at the code as mentioned before. As for GMs - we don’t look at code, turns, printouts, or any of the forms of communications we receive or send out for any in-game information. We don’t modify turnresults nor any other underhand methods of gaining an advantage. Any game information is there from that specific source (ie playing the game and information from team-mates) and that alone…
Generally I still think it a major benefit to the game for GMs to play. Rob, John and Colin don’t play the game for example. Stu, Ed do (mostly in our Grudge team) but generally only myself and Sam play outside of that.
It gives a valuble insight into problems and issues as seen from the player perspective (having chatted to Bill and Pete I can certainly appreciate why that is important) and hopefully shows you guys that we actually enjoy the game that we run. (Personally I’m a bit of a fan of the game at present!) Obviously it causes some issues, and we’re anxious about how that is perceived so I try to answer any questions that come up in as forthright a manner as possible. In nearly 7 years of running the game once at the beginning of us playing and once about a year ago I felt it best not to continue playing in a particular game where potential conflcts became a concern.
For anyone who does program for us we’ll deal with that if it becomes an issue. At present no-one has stepped forward so the issue is mute, but should it not be I’d be more than happy to discuss it with the programmer concerned. We’ve got some ideas on how to proceed having done this a lot before; we’re pretty experienced at this sort of thing nowadays.
As it’s the print routine it’s basically read an access database produced by the Process program and then present that information in PDF and XML form so there should be no secrets to be found.
What language? Most recently I’ve been doing c# part time… Building .msi installers is my primary job now… sucks compared to real programming. 3 years ago I was working in Java… 5 years ago C++…(remember very little of that now). Visual Basic well before that.
