Darrell, I'll see if I can clarify my previous note (I
was recommending Brad Brunet's simple PRS proposal
from Bree 13):
% games completed
+ % team wins
+ MVP reward
+ comparison of VP score to your nation in past games
Still, rewards greedy play. Punishes good team play.
Actually, only of the four factors -- the last one --
can potentially be increased by greedy play (and even
that is tempered by Fred's addition, below). The
others all reward team focus.
Rewards careful selection of positions and games.
It does the opposite, which is the point of the last
factor: instead of comparing VP's of Rhun to the
Noldo, Rhun is compared to an average of other Rhuns.
That way, players can freely choose the nation they
want to play without worrying that playing the Woodies
is going to drag down their rating.
Fails to punish drops.
That's what the first factor does -- computes % of
games completed.
Isn't this clear?
Relies on voting system that
few will bother with.
Doesn't "rely" on it. If people do vote for MVP, it's
added.
[I wrote:] Thus, you can get a great rating even
playing Rhun.
Sure, if you go FP, stay home, do nothing but place
and improve pops, horde gold, train characters, and do
a host of other things that will keep you off the DS
radar.
Remember, only the last factor calculates VP score --
everything else rewards team play. And about the VP
scores, I recommended Fred's system:
1 point for every military battle your army wins
against an enemy army.
1 point for every enemy pop center your army captures.
1 point for every enemy character you assassinate.
1 point for every enemy pop center your emissaries
influence away.
1 point for every artifact your mages pick up
This system is "okay" compared to the current
"horrid"
system, but it still fails to reward all aspects of
great team play.
It's true that it doesn't reward ALL aspects of team
play. No system is perfect. No game is perfect. No
suggestion is perfect.
But we've had some good thoughts on the list, and by
combining them, we can offer a simple, elegant way to
include ratings, which everyone can feel free to value
or ignore as best fits their gaming pleasure.
Cheers,
Dan N
