PRS Commentary

Some notes on the publically available PRS data that's up on the MEGames website.

There are 320 ranked players. I'm counting 6 rankings:

Valar (individual chess-style rankings)
Maia (experience rankings)
Istari (VP based ranking)
Vote - Best Enemy
Vote - Best Team Player
Vote - Best Individual Player

There is 1 player on all 6 lists.
There are 9 players on 5 lists.
There are 27 players on 4 lists.
There are 44 players on 3 lists.
There are 92 players on 2 lists.
There are 146 players on 1 list.

The Top Valar player is 67th on the Istari list.
The Top Istari player is 67th on the Valar list.
Coincidence those numbers are the same, but to be top in one is to be low in the other? Well, of the Top 10 Valar players, only 4 are on the Istari list. Of the Top 10 Istari players, 6 are on the Valar list. Whatever that means...the numbers are pretty much all over.

Something more interesting: Of the top Total Vote getters, adding up all 3 votes, the guys in positions 2, 3, 4, and 5 have NO SCORE on the web site. That means these guys are rated below 104th for all three measured scores. 400 VP's but voted best teammate, or enemy, etc! Now this one means something, as far as I'm concerned! (I recall voting for one of them too...)

Disclaimer - I'm personally first on no list and not one of those top vote getters without a score, so I'm not subtley trying to make myself look good. I'm just a guy with a laptop and unpredictable periods of free time. I've been an avid public supporter of the PRS, having proposed a couple of my own methods over the course of the debate, and personally feel the Vote is the most meaningful as peer recognition for one's efforts and style of play is more important that a simple mathematical formula that doesn't take what many of us consider "good play" necessarily into account.

Note: the spreadsheet from which this information is derived was created by simply copy-pasting the information on the website into tables, linking by a master name list into one large query of all scores/ranks by name. As this information is public, I'll be glad to forward this Excel file onto anyone who requests it of me off list. Please put PRS in the Subject line to avoid me deleting your email by mistake.

Sounds great - who are the players if you don't mind me asking? I'd like to see your spreadsheet but at present probably won't be able to play with it.

I think they're using far more games worth of data for
the other rankings than for the voting system. Voting
has only been going on for 6 months or a year, right?
If you've not completed a game in that period, you
won't have had the oppertunity to get a single vote
yet.

I would think the biggest effect in this score comes
from players not returning the game end pole.

I'd rather not type in the names, they're all on the listings or the
spreadsheet. It's more of a theoretical discussion I was pointing to.
Spreadsheet on it's way to me@...
