oops, sorry for pressing reply before I typed in anything for the previous
message.

Hi Mike I am not sure if you have got the point here. Or
maybe you have.
Let's see if I can clarify things. If a player wants to use a
name other
than his real name that is okay. I have had several players
ask for this
for various reasons and that is okay.

I've been in games with fours John's in our side, and another with three
Michael's. In such cases we give people fake names and use that instead of
using initials. These names tend to remain from game to game, so the real
name becomes lost.

So in that case I need to know what the players think about
the situation
and if they are happy about the rules we put forward.

yes to being happy about the rules you put forward. People can run another
nations when someone drops (it beats the nation doing nothing), while
someone tries to find a replacement. But trying to hide it from the GM isn't
good.

For what reasons are these players hiding their identity?

Why do people cheat ? Without a master's degree in human behaviour, or a
huge grant to produce a paper, I can only assume people are cheating to gain
an advantage for themselves.

In my games, i like to have the group do frequent talks between ourselves
(ie Clints gives out the mailing list with your turnsheet). And to be
willing to support each other. In one 2950 game my QA had the khand drop,
and the corsairs go dark. Rather than leap to the top of the DS sides, I've
been asked to not make armies, cut back on my naming characters, and funnel
all my profits to the DS in the front lines. My score is only in the middle
half of the team, its boring without armies, but 10K goes out every turn -
and we just went past turn 11.

I think playing good team games will remind people that they don't need to
play two nations to ensure they get the support they need. This might cut
back on people cheating.

Is it to gain an in game advantage -

Yeap. Its unlikely they would run two nations, and try to hide that fact, if
they had honest intentions.

in which case this is not allowed (ie in a

single person
game,ie one position per player game, the rules are just that.
Anything
else must be discussed with the GM first.)

The GM LOVES talking to players. If not as if he has a life about PBM games.

There are plenty of
opportunities to get games with us whereby you can run more than one
position if that is what you like to do. (The reason for one
position per
player is that you are able to co-ordinate more effectively and have a
certain guarantee about the posiitons actions which is not
normally there).

I hope that helps and that you can answer some of my queries above.

Thanks

Clint
