question about transports

What happens when a Navy, on a pop center recruits more troops then will fit in the boats?

Thanks

From the rules, E-12:

If an army has some ships but too few to carry the men it will remain an army, and if it moves inland will leave the ships anchored behind. Alternatively, if a navy recruits more troops than the ships can carry, it will turn into an army, keeping the ships unless it then moves inland, at which point the ships will be anchored.

Hope this helps.

Most importantly will it no longer be a navy and thus no longer be able to be attacked by navies? Thanks for you replay.

Scott

It will no longer be attackable by navies.

“Armies” can have two tags, “army” and “navy”, only “navy” can have naval combat.
And the second a “navy” recieves 1 more troop than it can transport, it becomes “army” with all the rules that aply to such units.

My understanding: if a navy have exactly enough transports to carry its troops early in the turn and this navy recruit during the turn then it will become an army (with ships) , but if that navy/army split of some troops (making a new army) then it will become a navy again at the end of the turn without having to PickUpShips.

Am I right?

you are correct.

Navies are nothing more than armies with a particular type of item in the “baggage train”: transport ships. Whenever an army with boats has fewer troops than the lift capacity, it gets called a ‘navy’ and can move through water hexes; when an army with boats has more troops than lift capacity, think of it as such, ie an army with ships in the baggage.

The key being:

Will that “navy” Fight as a navy during Combat/200’s if it has too many troops to otherwise Move as a navy during the 800’s.

I don’t know, but I don’t see that question being answered. Anyone know?

Brad

There is no opportunity at the begining of the turn to change the status of the navy to army (combat before transfers or recruitment).

The fine point Sverre made about 765 returning a excess troop army with ships back into a navy within the same turn is very good information…

Yes, as long as you don’t “force” it to become an army (movement…) then you’re dealing with a bureaucracy - “It says here a Navy…”…
