Could you clarify this for me? If I attack or threaten a pop center with an
army, say twice the defensive strength of the pop center do I still run the
  risk of loosing the commander?

  Chris
  RD: No.

A commander can never be killed or injured by threatening no matter how powerful the pop.

If an army successfully attacks a pop, the characters in the army never suffer death or injury (unlike in open battle against another army, where characters in an army can get injured even if they are on the winning side).

However if your army attacks a pop which 2x the strength of your army, the army commander will probably die, and I -think- (altho I'm not certain on this point as it was so long ago) any other characters in the army will die also.

  Hope that helps,

  Richard.

You can send your army against a pop center to
purposely siege it. Even if you are not capable of
taking it. In some situations you may even want to
sacrifice your character and army to cause the siege.
Hoping in-turn to bankrupt your opponent.

An army strength that is above 50% of the pop center
strength will give you a 'chance' of survival. You
suffer loses and "bounce" off the pop center walls.
Below 50% you will most likely not survive.

As far as characters traveling with the army, I don't
know an answer to that. I would guess you probably
would not survive as per the scenario above.

    JCC
RD: I seem to recall that the last time I (unintentionally!) suicided an
army against the walls of a pop, all characters "with" the army died. But
it was a long time ago (I've been more careful since!) so I won't swear to
  it.

What nation do you play in game # seventy three (73)?

If it was 73, wouldn't Arthedain be answering all these questions?

As for the attacks on pops and the nitty gritty specific details
that don't matter as much as lucky dice anyway....if you can take
it, take it. If you don't have enough to take it and attack it
anyway, there's a good chance you'll die. This chance of death
increases as your chances of taking the pop decreases. Common
sense and the odd piece of strange luck, good or bad, and you
won't go too far wrong. There are no magic numbers or formula.

Further example, a 58 agent recently kidnapped an enemy army
commander on his capital while a 71 was unable to steal from one
of the same nation's villages. Show me that rule for that :frowning:
